Can't have a discussion about books without including Robert Hienlines "Stranger in a Strange Land"
Still my favorite book although its been awhile since I read it last. This one was passed down to me in my teens from my Mom. She must have thought it had some value to it, besides she name her cat after one of the main characters, Jubal.
I recomend this book to everyone.

back when the paperback came out (in maybe '62, '63 ?) my dad was travelling a lot... picked up the book in airport, prolly...
he had been reading scifi (& heinlein) since he was a teen during WWll, and during the years after the war...
anyways, when he was finished with the novel, he gave me his copy.... (he often gave me his paperbacks, and encouraged me to visit the local public library as well... tho' i never did finish the copy of miller's _tropic of cancer_ but that's another story - my dad gave me a copy just because the book was banned... go figure...)
well, during the 50s, heinlein was writing one "juvenile" novel per year, and i had pretty much read them all by '63 (i was maybe 11 or so...) and the martians in "stranger" were definitely the same martians as the ones in "red planet"...
umm, at age 11 i suppose some of the stuff in the novel was a bit beyond me... but it did pique my interest, and as i have re-read it over the following decades, i find i still enjoy it... (as well as much of heinlein's other work, mmmm?)

robert & virginia heinlein occasionally refer to _stranger_ in their non-fiction reminiscences (e.g _grumblings from the grave_ ...) & once, rather disparagingly, in one of the later fiction pieces (_the number of the beast_)...
heinlein was working on the novel sporadically throughout the fifties, but realized the market wasn't quite ready for this bit of "cream of pulp fiction" yet... and he was trying to work through to the proper ending...
the novel was serialized in one of the leading SF mags of the day, and relaesed as a novel at under 180,000 words... the result of vigorous trimming away at surplus prose... the "recent" release of "the original uncut version" was a delight, and there is still much discussion about which version is "better"...

Funny that he should come up now, as I'm re-reading some of his stuff. Currently, I'm about halfway through Farnham's Freehold and enjoying it as much as I did 20 years ago...nice to see that somethings don't change...

I have just started reading or actualy listening (long drive to work perfect for books on tape) to him again. Green Feilds of Earth is a collection of short stories that I liked. Especialy the poem Green Feilds of Earth at the end.
Right now I'm listening to "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". Kind of hard to get used to the chunky speaking style of the characters but it is interesting in an AI sort of way.
