Anyone here ever try absinthe? Is there anything to it really? Is it any different than plain distilled spirits?

I've seen it on some web sites and the shit is fucking expensive, seems a waste for some thing that is not much different than other much cheaper bottles of premium spirits available locally.

I've had it in the Czech Republic, it's expensive and only a tiny bit different than schnapps. Also, everyone looked at me like I was a touristy fagot when I ordered it.

nothing great about absynth. the australian stuff contains nearly no wormwood, so you'l just get straight up smashed. the european stuff does give a different buzz, though its a bit of a 'brave drink' imo. but no, you're not going to be seeing a green pixie. if you do, that's alcohol poisoning setting in.
cheap, bah... got a friend brewing some ^_^

I drank actual Absinthe with the thujone(Wormwood) in it when i was in Spain. I drank it and I can deffinetly say that it is a little different than being drunk normally. Its like you feel drunk but at the same time you feel lucid and can think clearly. Its hard to explain. My friend on the trip drank a lot absinthe and was swaying back and forth and asking me what it was like to be high. I said "why?" and he said because he just drank a bunch of absinthe and didn't feel drunk. I didn't hallucinate and don't know anybody who did. Except for this one kid who drank almost a bottle of it and claimed somebody was following him. We aren't sure if he was making it up or not though.

I wouldn't call it "horrible", it tastes kind of like iced tea that's been brewed in the fiery pits of hell.

Lol. I tried it once in Europe and it was cool. It was almost like a lucid drunk. I wonder what it use to be like when there was more thujone in it.

most people operate under the FALSE assumption that thujon (wormwood) is a hallucinogenic drug. its not, that being said, it is a psychoactive substance. if i had to classify it, i would say it is somewhat of a "euphoric stimulant"...drinking good absinthe is similar to being drunk of anything else with a little bit of coke in your system

I'vr had the americanized version and pretty much got really wasted really fast. It's def. lucid-like. At certain points, I felt dissociated from my body.

Absinthe is usually made with anise oil which gives it the flavor of black licorice. It is not something that you're going to want to slam a bottle of at a party. But, if you are in a position to have a liquor cabinet, absinthe is something to have in it. There are cocktails to try other than water and sugar. (As a matter of fact, the very first coctail was made with absinthe.) Don't expect a trip unless you add something to it. It's pretty similar to any other distilled liquor. Still, you can get different buzzes from a fine cognac and a cheap vodka. Just make sure you get a good one, not just an expensive one because they're all expensive. Delaring absinthe a dangerous, addictive drug is like delaring war on Scotch. It's the alcohol.

True, very true. I enjoyed it when I had some European Absinthe. It gave me this creative and stoney feeling, which was interesting for a liqour.
-------------------- I believe with the advent of acid we discovered new way to think and it had to do with piecing together new thoughts of mind. Why is it that people think it's so evil? What is it about it that there is scares people so deeply? Because they are afraid that there is more to reality than they have ever confronted. That there are doors that they're afraid to go in and they don't want us to go in there either because if we go in, there we might learn something that they don't know. And that makes us a little out of their control.

The quality of the experience of absinthe is pretty low, but it can be fun just as a novelty. I ordered a couple bottles of real absinthe some years ago and fortified it with additional extract of wormwood, because I wanted to better distinguish the effects of the wormwood/thujone from the alcohol. The effects of 140+ proof alcohol tend to drown out the effects of the wormwood because by the time you feel the latter you're usually very drunk. The effects are not spectacular. I'd liken them to smoking a bit of ultra-low-grade pot with many stems and seeds: "head-buzz," if you will. Once I had a bit too much of this fortified drink and felt as if I was two gulps away from a seizure. It is exotic, strong, (green) alcohol with an extra psychoactive ingredient; but personally I look at it as something novel to have tucked away in the cellar for Halloween parties or Jack the Ripper investigations in the decrepit, whore-laden Whitechapel district of the East end of London in the late 1880's.

I used to be a "connoisseur" of the suff, much like I am of Wine or of mushrooms now. I've had many different encarnations from many different countries. The only one that was any different from any other liquor was The Chezc Republic label "La Bohem". It's about $300 online and about 180 proof.
The truth is, you get blind, blistering, shitfaced drunk before any decent or meaningful psychadelic effects take place. Though they're there, it's subtle, and you'll probably be much too drunk to care that only cool colors (green, blue, white) seem sharper and sounds seem to echo a bit or seem distant.
Not worth the money.

I read an article in the most recent issue of High Times where the reporter Bobby Black went to Burning Man and drank absinthe. He claimed his mind was totally blown, and that he was gripped by a psychedelic rapture. The funny thing is, he took a dozen hits of DMT crystal, as many drops of sublingual salvia extract, and even smoked crystal salvinorin A in the same night but felt absolutely nothing. Could the absinthe have triggered the residual DMT and Salvia in his system?
The absinthe that Black drank was century old pre-ban brew. Perhaps this absinthe was more the type Van Gogh was drinking, as opposed to the commonly manufactured, probably less potent absinthe of today.

In what way are you suggesting today's absinthe is less potent?
You can get absinthe made to old world, "pre-ban" recipes. It's still usually around 140 proof. You can get a bitter, which has a higher content of thujone. You can also get thujone extract to add to the bottle to make its content even higher.
BTW, it sounds to me like Bobby finally had everything catch up with him as he was drinking a glass of absinthe.
