Pot-withdrawal symptoms mirror nicotine’s, study finds

Pot-withdrawal symptoms mirror nicotine’s, study finds Jan 25, 2008 - examiner.com
Quitting marijuana after chronic use often leads to withdrawal symptoms similar to those suffered by cigarette smokers who give up the butts, says a new Johns Hopkins study.
The symptoms include irritability, anger and trouble sleeping, researchers at Hopkins’ School of Medicine found.
The study belies the commonly held belief that pot is a safer, less-addictive substance than tobacco or alcohol.
“These results indicate that some marijuana users experience withdrawal effects when they try to quit and that these effects should be considered by clinicians treating people with problems related to heavy marijuana use,” said Ryan Vandrey, the lead researcher for the study, published in the January edition of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
Vandrey defined heavy use as smoking marijuana 25 or more days a month and 10 tobacco cigarettes a day.
The study followed a dozen patients from the University of Vermont in Burlington and Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. More than 94 million Americans ages 12 and older have tried marijuana, the federal government says.
Treatment admissions related mainly to marijuana use have more than doubled since the early 1990s, now ranking on par with cocaine and heroin nationwide, experts say.
“Its always been the unspoken rule that nobody really wants to admit how serious and dangerous of a drug marijuana is,” said Michael Gimbel, addictions educator at Sheppard Pratt Health System. “All the baby boomers and current users of pot think it’s safe and it ‘cures cancer.’ ”
A lack of data on the drug’s effects may have resulted in cannabis withdrawal symptoms not being characterized or included in medical reference literature, Vandrey suggested.

Yeah some do. Enough to make it a dangerously addictive drug? I really don't think so.
Everybody who inhales tobacco on a regular basis becomes addicted to it. The same cannot be said for pot.

what a statement...
i haven't smoked a cigarette in like 6 weeks and in the last 8-9 weeks i've only smoked weed once. i've been noticing my irritability and have diffidently been pissed off lately.
i think a lot of it is because of the way people treated me when i was a stoner and now im kind of putting my foot down, noticing that they are losers but they got away with fucking with me because i was high.

It really isn't looking too bright right now. I'm digusted by all of these deliberate half-truths and blatant mockeries of genuine scientific inquiry. Since through experience and observation cannabis is apparently not only safe but beneficial for all but a few people (in which case it is not damaging, merely used for no real purpose other than for preserving a negative status quo), I am forced to further cement my opinion that things are turning to pot.

"Treatment admissions related mainly to marijuana use have more than doubled since the early 1990s, now ranking on par with cocaine and heroin nationwide, experts say."
What they fail to mention is that the arrests for Cannabis has doubled also...resulting in such high treatment admissions...i highly doubt that anyone willingly checks themselves in to a treatment place for marijuana use, no matter how extreme the use

i dont think so...far as beneficial goes. to some yes, but for most, i really think that they would be better off without it.
i think the government should just legalize it. my brother(major pothead) once said "if they ever legalize weed, i would quit, just because i wouldn't be such a rebel for smoking it". if it were legal, people would probley make fun of potheads rather than outcasting them...resulting in potheads wanting to quit...imo.

Pot withdrawal symptoms are nothing like for nicotine according to everyone I know who has tried to quit both and noticed the difference.

I started trying to quit smoking cigarettes back in mid december. I've been struggling with it daily since, having one or two one day, and then going 3 without. Then losing it, and smoking for 3 days, and then quitting again. On the other hand, I quit smoking pot a few days after trying to quit smoking cigs, just because I forgot to smoke. Its been almost 6 weeks and I've barely thought of herb. I can quit smoking herb without a thought. I can kick an opiate habit with mild pains. But try quitting cigarettes and I want to jump off a cliff.
Edit- my use of marijuana would have fit their standards of "heavy". Daily, for the past 3 years.

And really, your w/d symptoms depend a lot on your mood about quitting. If you go into it being pissed that you have to quit, or not wanting to, it'll be a lot worse. But if you go into it thinking 'screw it I don't really feel like doing this for a while' its a lot easier. The people in this study were probably recruited and had to force themselves to quit for the study, not like the average joe who just decides to randomly quit one day.

I've gotten my news from the shroomery for about a year and just birthed my first 4 cakes today, but I gotta say I love how whenever I read bullshit like this I always want to say something about it, but by the time i get there it's been torn to pieces already! I just hope more people start getting there news filtered by intelligent people. Keep up the good work!!!

Could someone clarify that? Do they mean heavy MJ use was defined to include 10 tobacco cigs? That would be a big suprise, and is just saying quitting tobacco gives withdrawl symptoms strikingly similar to... erm... quitting tobacco.

This article is useless. The wording is ambiguious. Is it trying to say that "Heavy use is defined as smoking marijuana 25 days a month [for weed] and 10 ciggarettes a day [for tobacco]," or "Heavy use is defined as smoking 25 days a month and 10 cigarettes a day [at the same time?]" I smoked weed almost every day for 2 years, got bored with it a and quit with no problems except insomnia for a few days. Now tobacco is another story. I'm hopelessly hooked. I havent gone longer than 2 days without nicotine for the past 4 years. Every time I try, I get chills, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and MAJORLY PISSED AT EVERYTHING I SEE. Shit. Time for a smoke. Fuck the ignorant masses who are afraid of people finding themselves. Everyone should roll up 5 joints, get 5 free matchbooks, put a joint and a matchbook in 5 plastic bags, and put them random mailboxes. Now if you excuse me, Im going to go inhale some death to keep me from distributing that free of charge too. (Its only been 4 hours since my last one. I know its sad.)
EDIT: I'm out... You know what? Nevermind. I'm mad at cigarettes. I hate them. I quit. For real this time.

This is one of those things that changes with every person. I smoked tobacco for about five months a quit without even realizing it. I hate to say, but the only reason I did it was because of friends, which is probably why it was so easy. I had no urges to continue smoking it and suffered no withdrawals. As for smoking marijuana, the first time I ran out of marijuana and couldn't get it for a few days I noticed I was have trouble sleeping and was more irritable. All depends on the person I guess.

I smoked cigs for 9 months of my senior year in high school. Then my father (who I have a close relationship with) asked me to stop, and I did very easily. Cold-turkey. Even when I was smoking cigs, I don't feel like I was ever addicted. It was more of a habit. Whenever I would get in my car to drive somewhere I would light up a cig, mainly out of boredom really. And whenever I would be drinking at a party I would usually smoke a few cigs throughout the night. Pot on the other hand I have had a hard time putting down (which I am currently trying to limit). I, too, qualify as a "heavy user" as this article defines. One of the many things I have noticed about drugs, is that their effects affect people differently. Personally, I don't think I could ever be addicted to cigs. Mainly because I don't enjoy the smoke. Pot on the other hand, I would say that, I am addicted. It's more of a psychological addiction as opposed to the physical addiction that accompanies cigs.

There is definitely physical and mental withdrawal symptoms to quitting marijuana use. Most notably loss of appetite, shaky hands and irritability. Also feeling sad or depressed seems to be common as well as sitting there and then all of a sudden you feel the urge to rapidly jerk one of your limbs. I haven't particularly noticed trouble sleeping once I get to sleep but when you are wanting weed it can make you anxious and pissed off which can cause trouble with getting to sleep.
