Because it's very direct at showing that it's a cliché

The stuff that sucks, is trite, tech-nerdy, spaced out schlock that tries to come across as profound when it's really just way too colorful and extremely cliche.

it's only cliche because you know what to expect based on the expression the artist is using, like how you already know the formula to a detective novel before you start reading it. i still find both mediums can be aesthetically pleasing, and of course that is just my subjective opinion but i think generalizing a whole genre is a mistake as it's not the formula which makes the piece but the soul. i've read a lot of lame detective novels but there are good ones out there.
i think there is some great technical skill and artistic value in some psychedelic art.

I definitly agree that there is a lot of great psychedelic art. Just like there is a lot of great psychedelic music (six organs of admittance) despite the fact that there is shit psychedelic music (most psy trance).
I know that "good" and "bad" are subjective value judgements and all that I still firmly stand behind my judgement that there is such a thing as art that just sucks, whether or not people like it.

Perhaps because people who are not artists are inspired by their experiences, yet technically-incapable of expressing them through art?
There is some amazing psychedelic art out there, though. Check this out:

My favorite "psychedelic" art form is macro photos of nature. It reminds me of the incredible world that is visible only when you give it your rapt and total attention.

I must say, I think your signature pic is an example of crappy psychedelic art too. In fact, it's what inspired me to post the thread. No offense intended.

Veritas, you're totally right. I know there is a lot of good psychedelic art out there, there's just sooooo much crap that it's hard to ignore.

That's a 3-D version of a work by Henri Rousseau from 1910.

Dang, I like EC's sig.
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”
