Shroomerites: Expand my musical horizons!
    #7934769 - 01/26/08 12:26 PM (16 years, 6 days ago)

I need new music, plain and simple. Anything from recommendations to download links are appreciated. Everyone loves sharing tunes after all.

Here's what I'm into.

My fav all time band is Clutch... groovy '70s styled rock with waaaay out there lyrics. My sig is actually the entirety of one of their songs.

Otherwise, I love jazz... esp. swing era and free jazz... so Miles Davis, Coltrain, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock etc. Also into more trippy stuff like Medeski, Martin, and Wood.

I like a little progressive... the usuals: Floyd, Rush, etc. On the heavier side of prog I like Opeth... but prog isn't my favorite genre.

I've tried to like ambient shit and just can't get into it.. same for most electronica.

Dig underground hiphop:Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, etc.

Some other random favorites: Guster, Our Lady Peace, John Scofield, Corrosion of Conformity, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Alice in Chains, The Asylum Street Spankers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Allison Krauss, PJ Harvey, Neko Case, The National, Pantera, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Ministry, The Doors...

Really waaaay too many to name, but I'm feeling a little stagnant! Save me people!

If you like Clutch, check out Superdrag.
I'm not very well versed in the way of jazz; yageman might be able to help you in that department. Send him a PM. He's always trying to find people with similar musical tastes, with little luck.

Check the links in my signature. You might enjoy some stuff from both threads.

No. I'm seeking the oppinions of enlightened community members that I've come to have a measure of respect for. Plus, I troll reviews and commentaries often... but there's so much shit to sift through that it's not exactly a simple thing to download reems of shit that I'll never listen to. Trying to avoid HD clutter.

Whenever I want to look up new things I use wikipedia. Just read about it and names will start to pop up.

Check out some STS9. They are a league of their own. there is a thread with some uploads floating around here.

Tried post-rock yet? There's quite a few good bands in that category... Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Pelican, Mogwai, Do Make Say Think, etc.

Yep. I like it now and again. Explosions had the one album with the tune about the submarine... that specific album was really good.

Sigur's a little too out there for me... don't doubt the musical integrity, but not quite my thing.

Pelican rocks.

Never listened to Godspeed though.

I love live music... I guess that comes from digging jazz etc.

Downloading.

Fuck yeah for Tribe. Don't know the rest of those so I'll have to examine.

I'm mostly into electronic music, but I do like a bit of everything.

Non electronic recommendations (bare with me, I don't know the bands you mentioned, but these are way badass):
Crash Worship
Olivia Tremor Control
Legendary Pink Dots
Bardo Pond (album: Lapsed)
Psychic TV
Bibio (some of it is electronic, but real beautiful)
Coil - Music to Play in the Dark Volume 1
Flying Lotus (a bit hip-hop, instrumental and electronic)

Post-Rock recommendations:
This Will Destroy You
James Blackshaw

Electronic recommendations:
EU - Warm Math (somewhat instrumental, but daaaaaaamn good russian idm)
Bola - Kroungrine (phenomenal)
World's End Girlfriend (some of the strangest music when you're tripping)
Penta (ooooooh so fuckin yummy psytrance)
People Like Us (I don't really know what to make of these guys but they are really psychedelic, using cutups of old time tracks, electronic sounds, and awesome lyrics)
Soul Oddity (boyoyoyoing)
Plaid (cosmic feeling psychedelic music)
Squarepusher (any album really, but check out music is a rotted one note, ultravisitor or do you know squarepusher)

Compilations:
K & D sessions (talk about chillin)

I figured other people might want recommendations too, so I just listed a ton of artists I like a lot. Enjoy

I always listen to Avenged Sevenfold, Pixies, and Tool. Sometimes accompanied by some Van Halen for those crazy ass solos and Bob Marley when I'm feeling the raggae.

Tool blows me away.
