anything household i could use?
and would it do anything to begin spawning to just vermiculite and then adding BRF later?...or are the nutrients in the BRF required to for the mycelium to further colonize?

you cant spawn to vermiculite.. it's non-nutritive.. you can use it to case, but it is a shitty casing in most circumstances.
i dont think you know what 'spawning' is from what i'm reading...
what are you trying to do exactly?
please clarify so i/we can help you more..

why dont you just keep them as cakes and place them in a fruiting chamber?
adding a verm casing wont really do any good.. might as well save your verm and just dunk/roll..

you could spawn to coir
you can find coir at most pet stores in the form of a compressed brick

dude dont wast a grow go to lowes and get some poo $3.50 for 40lb then do 4-1 so if qts jars, use 1 qt colonized cake for 4 qts of poo. putting brf in later will probably be like dumping hundreds of thousands of bad spores and bacteria in there if not sterilized.good luck but that is what i would do.

why would you be in a hurry to spawn something. it can wait until you have the right bulk substrate

just dunk n roll em dude. there's no point in crumbling them up and then casing with verm. you could save the crumbling step which will only cause the myc to have to recover from the damage you did to it. dunk n roll. trust me.

i dont think he means spawn.. i think he ran out of brf so he is looking for something else to make cakes with. i believe he got his terms mixed up. he's looking for a new substrate in place of brf i think..

sorry about all this everyone
i'm living with my parents, so this whole growing thing hasnt been working out too well. thus far i have only had one cake fruit once, resulting in only 6 grams dried. I know that I'd be able to produce mushrooms in massive quantities if i only had the privacy needed to do such.
I was freaking out about doing something quickly because i am going on a trip soon, and this was my one window to do something productive. the cakes with and dunk/roll werent really doing anything for me so i figured i would just do something a little experimental as a last bit of my project.
basically what i did was transform my small shoebox size terrarium from a perlite/cake growing chamber to a small tray. I layered the bottom with a bit of vermiculite, cut/crumbled the colonized cakes onto that, covered the cakes with 2 cups verm/1 cup water/1 cup BRF mixture, and cased with a small layer of vermiculite again. i know that it is most likely not going to work, or get contaminated, or produce very little if anything but i was just trying to get rid of the last of my materials in an attempt to produce a couple more fine mushrooms. I'm just beginning, and i understand that this is most likely going to be a complete failure, so don't worry about telling me that.
i dont plan on trying any more growing until i go to college in the fall...it's just way to hard to provide a good environment for colonization and fruiting and drying when having to hide all of the equipment and activity. i have a couple of houses in which i plan to set up grows for friends and myself using a variety of different substrates and methods in order to refine my techniques and learn as much as possible.
so until then, i plan to check out the forums and learn as much as possible in preparation for my future grows. thanks for all your attempted help i'm sorry i couldnt heed your advice due to my restrictions.
thanks for welcoming me to the shroomery community
peace
