Busted downloading a file

I got this in my email today...should i worry? How can I continue to download stuff without them knowing? I have only had this internet for a little less than two weeks...lol...anyways, here is a copy of the email
Dear Subscriber:
This email is being sent to you by Road Runner Customer Care because we have received a complaint that your computer has been used to distribute copyrighted material without authorization through a peer-to-peer program. We received this complaint from the movie studio, record company, television studio or other company that owns the copyrighted material. The purpose of this email is to remind you that the distribution of copyrighted material in this fashion may violate both the copyright laws and Road Runner?s terms of service, and to tell you a bit about peer-to-peer programs, the dangers they can pose to your computer and our network, and the steps you can take to protect yourself.
A computer can become accessible to a peer-to-peer network for an unlimited period of time after a peer-to-peer program is downloaded. You may not even be aware that such a program is on your computer; a child or a visitor to the home could have downloaded it. That is why we want to alert you to this issue. Peer-to-peer programs may contain many problems. For example: · Downloading and offering for upload copyrighted material without authorization is unlawful. If you or others using your computer have been doing this, you could be subject to civil penalties and criminal fines. Such activity also violates the Road Runner terms of service. · The programs allow any anonymous person on the Internet to look at your computer files and copy them for themselves. Such a hacker could view all of your files, which can lead to identity theft. · The programs, which use large amounts of memory, can interfere with the functioning of your computer by destabilizing your operating system, leading to a general sluggishness at bootup and during operation. · The programs can contain spyware, adware, malware, viruses and pornography. If you are interested in a discussion of problems associated with peer-to-peer file sharing, please follow this link: http://research.pestpatrol.com/whitepapers/p2p_impact.asp.
If you use the Windows OS, the best way to remove peer-to-peer programs is through the Add/Remove Programs tool. Other removal options are discussed at http://security.uchicago.edu/peer-to-peer/no_fileshare.shtml.
Thank you for subscribing to Road Runner.
Very truly yours,
Road Runner Customer Care

Dear Sir/Madam:
I am contacting you on behalf of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and one or more of its member companies.
We submit that the MPAA is authorized to act on behalf of its member companies (the MPAA Members) with respect to the matter described in this notice. The MPAA Members own intellectual property rights, including exclusive rights protected under copyright law, in many motion pictures, television programs and other audiovisual works (collectively, the MPAA Titles). We believe that your Time Warner Cable Internet account is being used to reproduce and/or distribute copies of one or more MPAA Titles on the Internet, in violation of the MPAA Members legal rights. We have set forth at the close of this letter the details concerning this infringement, including the title(s) of the MPAA Title(s) in question, the IP address of your account at the time of the infringement, and the date and time of the infringement. The audiovisual works being offered through your Internet account include the following:

Under certain circumstances, copyright infringement can give rise to federal criminal liability, with penalties as high as five years imprisonment plus a $250,000 fine. (See 17 U.S.C. ' 506; 18 U.S.C. ' 2319.)
Such infringing activity also constitutes a violation of Time Warner Cable's Abuse Policy/Terms of Service Agreement, and such breach may give Time Warner Cable the right to terminate your Internet access service. We therefore demand that you immediately:
1) Cease any unauthorized offering or downloading of the above title(s), and any other film or television titles whose copyright is owned by the MPAA Members, on any peer-to-peer or other internet services; and
2) Delete from your computer any unauthorized copies of the above title(s), and any other film or television titles owned by the MPAA Members, which you have downloaded from or offered on any peer-to-peer or other internet services.

I have gotten two of those in my lifetime.
The only sure fire way to not have your isp bitch is to not download. But there are other things you can do...
Use private trackers, not public ones. Public ones are more vulnerable.
Use PeerGuradian and update the P2P blocklist frequently.
Stay away from hot, new downloads. Those are watched most frequently. ( I was busted for DL one of the harry potters as well!)

I was busted when I was with Cox Communications. They got an e-mail from Paramount for sharing some movie(don't even remember). The security guy from Cox told me that if it happened 2 more times, that they would cancel my service and ban me. That's when I switched to TV shows, lol. I'm a big fan of updating IP filters. The client of P2P I use has an option to integrate it into the GUI. I would also see if you could get DSL, mainly because they have a dynamic IP instead of a static one.

Yes US. No anything else. As it stands, most ISPs (including mine) have a policy of privacy. They wont give away your information without a warrent. So the copyright holder doesn't know who you are. You are only in trouble with the ISP.

good...i knew not to contact they MPAA directly, as they would then have my information...but i did send an email to my ISP asking if they gave out my info and for a copy of their privacy policy.
Is time warner associated with warner bros in any way?

edit: forget about that question, they are. Not only that, they are the ones that make/back/whatever the fuck the movie companies do, with harry potter. oh well, worrying wont solve a thing, guess my movie downloading days are over
unless i can somehow figure out usenet, anyone want to pm me/show me how to do it?

u should let the mods there know. they may be able to track something down and get rid of the problem. the group i ran off we found b/c of a comment one made, then we noticed a whole invite tree was seeding the same torrent, so if one got banned, they had five other accounts to keep going w/. the person that originally reported them told me, "they are obviously not here to make friends". i responded to him, "let me know if they did make friends so i can ban them too."

I think this only happens in the US isnt it?
I have never got such an email and would just respond by saying I owned the original and wanted to download a backup copy.

well, even backing up your own copies can be considered illegal. The RIAA and MPAA have made a mockery of the fair use laws. It even says on the cases of dvd's here that any copying is illegal and will be investigated by the FBI...

well the owner of oink lives in london and his door got kicked in by the po po's.
as far as peer guardian goes. after installing and running go to list manager. click add and there is a browse file or url option. there are 20 list in the drop down url menu, one by one select all of them. after that go to the main screen for pg2 and check updates. if u did it right, it should say 20 list up to date, 0 disabled. this will use all the pg list as well as all the bluetick list.

can a mod please erase the last post as most of it is fit for an article on snopes. anytime u d/l w/ utorrent, the person u are d/l'ing from can see your ip. that is how they get cha. if the place u search or get torrent files from is public, your chances of getting caught are even greater.
if u want to minimize risk, use private sites. run pg2 w/ all 20 list enabled. waiting to d/l the new movie does no good, the people that are watching can seed forever. canada is not a safe haven, as demonoid.

blah its late at night so i dont want to read through all those posts. this isnt about downloading this is about sharing. Its alright to download just dont let other people download off of you or you will get busted. paramount pictures busted me for downloading jackass through a torrent. The problem with torrents is you have to let others download off of you, unless you use limewire which now supports torrents. The problem is you have to shut off like 8 different sharing options on limewire (they are hidden to trick you) to make it so you only download and dont share.

even when u just d/l u reveal your ip to those who are seeding (could be the po po's). the only way to be safe is to not pirate. i have seen the bad forces of nature use some freakish tactics to bust people. the best advice i can give is to use pg2 w/ all 20 list activated (amounts to wearing a condom) and use private sites only. i used to say only use utorrent 1.6.1 but now some of the best private sites have banned it, but if u don't use those sites, it doesn't matter, use 1.6.1.
