starting a radio station
    #7930275 - 01/25/08 03:02 PM (16 years, 26 days ago)

i really want to start my own local radio station. but not one that only goes 5 blocks. i want to start one in the city.

i also don't have very much money, with child support, legal issues and such.

does anybody have any knowledge on how to start something like this. loans, investors, etc....

it would be a station that plays what the others don't, like manson, fear factory, local bands, etc...

p.s. not sure which forum to put this in.

that would be near impossible i think..

you would probably get censored if you played vulgar stuff too.

although they play fear factory on the radio here.

107.3 the fox rocks klfx ftw!

ya.. i mean you wouldn't be able to do it by yourself..

you would definitely need a group of investors to help with the start up costs..

if i were you, i would just get a job as a DJ or something and try to make your way up..

there is so many things you have to do to get started..

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/howtoapply.html here's a good place to start.

damn. its gonna be a pain in the ass. i wonder if i should go to local radio stations an consult them on what to do. maybe they would have some insight.

you have to apply for a permit which is apparently hard to obtain. each application requires a fee, which i have yet to track down.

On top of that, their is high demand for fm bandwith. which limits by chances of getting a permit.

Then their is the money. I believe i could find some investors. But where do you start?

I've daydreamed about that as well. Maybe this will help, straight from the FCC:

dr,

i used to actually have a radio show for a local station and unless you have some really big bucks. nothing is going to happen. i don't mean to burst your bubble, but it's going to be extremely difficult.

there's a ton of legal bullshit you're going to have sort through as well. it took my radio station 10 years to just get approval to expand beyond a 50 mile radius.

while I didn't have access or knowledge of the bills they were paying, my best guess is that it was costing them about $100,000 a year just to operate at the 50mile mark.
