Pink Oysters on supplemented newspaper. Update 1-1-08
#7812873 - 12/30/07 09:14 AM (16 years, 1 month ago) |

pink oyster spawned to newspaper supplemented with wheat bran and gypsum.
 shred the paper
 measure the supplements.

wet it up and spawn it.
10 days later i have this. I actually forgot about it for a few days. I was surprised to find it fruiting in my garage under its Publix bag tent.

I've moved these guys outside so they'll get some light and fresh air. I have a similar experiment using shaggy mane. I'll post pics of that if it works out.
seeya guys!

Nice, how much spawn did you use?
The newspaper, bran and gypsum were just wetted, no heating?

they grew!

i'll harvest today. Unfortunately these mushrooms were the centerpiece of my patio table which left them as victims of second hand tobacco smoke. My roommates smoked maybe 12 cigarettes next to the mushrooms. do you guys think they'll taste like smoke?

no contams appeared? have you sterilized the paper and/or maintain the substrate in a fruiting chamber?

when i first found the basket there was some sign of minor contamination but they are gone now. There was no treatment of the paper at all. i leave the basket on my back porch, misting it 2-3 times a day.

They look great! A few questions though:
What's the humidity of your environment? Have you measured it? Psychedelic shrooms often require high humidity (>90%); it's my impression you can grow these oyster mushrooms in a less humid environments such as a room of a house. However, the humidity in my house is about 35-40% isn't that too low?

nicely done. No ill effects from the bran? I guess the oyster colonizes the substrate before contams can get ahold of them?

Sweet. I wonder how I missed this thread the first time around? Newspapers are a great substrate for the price. . .free. I'll bet you could skip the gypsum, considerinig all the lime that goes into the papermaking process. RR
