48 Hour Dunk Experiment.

After 1st flush, I dunked 8 brf/verm cakes in water and left at room temperature for 48 hours. When I drained the water off, they had a fermented smell. Each cake was 3x the weight of what they were before I dunked them...
I didn't expect them to put out, but after 24 hours of being in the FC, they are already starting to trun from a dull grey/blue into brilliant white.
Just wanted to let everyone know I was doing this experiment..

it is no experiment. I used to dunk them for a few days

Aren't they prone to bacterial infection if they are dunked that long at room temperature instead of being refrigerated?

correct me if I'm wrong but usually a 24h soak is recommended for birthing why would you birth 48h on a second flush especially if it increases risk of contamination?
do you roll it in verm again as well?

No rolling second time around.
1st flush uses up all the moisture content in the cake.
I fear no contams since I incubate and fruit in temps below 75F.

Myc is pretty resistant to contams for the first few flushes. Fanning, misting and breathing around your cakes "increases risk of contamination" too.

Fanning and misting increases contamination risk? That's news to me. Fanning lowers contamination risk, and misting supplies moisture that is needed to keep the mycelium healthy. RR

I should have said could increase contamination risks. Like using shitty water to mist, overmisting, fanning with unclean hands, exposing the substrate during hand fanning, etc. The point was for the guy not to worry about soaking the cakes so much. Better?

You mean like using Fi-C-T? Fi-C-T is the ultimate misting solution for your cakes...

Or misting and fanning the same time by sticking out your tongue and blowing...
As has been said many times, it's a matter of allowing your water to become stagnant. They need FAE.

I always felt that manual fanning was to strong, and that it tends to blow any spores down deep into your sub.
I know I will get corrected for saying this but IMHO, if you have enough holes in your FC, and a perfect ultra sonic misting schedule, there is no need for manual fanning or manual misting.
Rehydrate your perlite before replacing spent sub.
I have learned this from experience, not posts, and I can honestly say that I stopped manually fanning years ago with no noticeable increase in contams or aborts, and a lot less time and effort.
The temp differences between your sub, FC, the cool water drops from the ultra, and the room the FC is in are usually great enough (2-3 degrees) that natural convection is occuring constantly.
With enough holes in your FC the FAE is always sufficient.
This manual fanning and manual misting thing is dogma IMHO.
