Is condensation the reason for my contams?
    #7929284 - 01/25/08 11:01 AM (16 years, 7 days ago)

I am no rookie to inoculating rye jars with a spore syringe, but I just lost half my jars of B+ (from a syringe) to trich. I also made 2 LC's from the same syringe and they both looked good, but I am getting trich in a few of those rye jars inoculated with the LC as well. I even got green mold in a lion's mane jar which has never happened to me before.

My thoughts on what happened is that one problem was that I used transpore tape instead of micropore on some of the infected jars since I had some laying around and no micropore at the time. Transpore tape sucks, dont even use it after PCing to cover inoculation holes because it seems to lose its stickiness quickly and want to pull up away from the lid.

Also, which I think is the main culprit, I that I got very very cold out about a week ago and the breaker blew to my FC room where I keep it at about 72f and 80+%rh. I came in that morning and the room was at about 55f and there was LOTS of condensation on the insides of all my jars because of the rapid temp drop.

Temperature changes cause air to be drawn into, and then puked out from the jars. If your filter is not up to par, contaminants hitch along with the air to ruin your project. The temperature alone didn't cause it, but coupled with shitty filters, there's your answer.

Makes sense. Thanks RR. I'll just have to make sure my breaker never blows again and use micropore tape.
