I had a RENA aquarium pump that you could buy replacement filters for....my new TOPFIN pump says there are no serviceable parts on it and it needs to be sent in for new filters/diaphragms.
Either way if I'm thinking about the correct kind of pumps your talking about, the filters are only polyfill-looking material stuffed in the air inlet hole. I've seen polyfill used in many different areas of fish aquarium filtration so I think you'll be fine with using that.
On another note...if yours is a RENA pump don't even bother calling customer service because their whole company including their products and service SUCKS!

they're little dime size filters and im not sure what brand it is.
but if they dont have any replacement filters from where i got it from what do you guys think of making a little poly ball and holding it on with a piece of micropore tape?
do you think that will be to much air restriction?

I know the filters your talking about, and good idea....but yea I would think micropore tape over top polyfill would make life a little harder for your pump. Maybe you could do what you said, only cut a hole out of the micropore tape in the center, to let it breath only through the polyfill in that area? Or just put polyfill in the hole, and tape it in place around the edges.
