Bulk bulk pasteurization.

What have you guys done for bulk bulk pasteurization? I need to be able to do around 20+ gallons. Not all at once mind you, but that would work too. Bear in mind that I have very, very little space and no access to the outdoors for any process, but am willing to put up with some crap in order to do get an assload of pasteurized bulk.

A pillowcase in a garbage can of 170 F water seems to do the trick.

Use a big ice chest and lots of hot water. I have a link in my sig to give you an idea. Obviously, you'll need a bigger ice chest than what's shown there if you are doing a lot. The styrofoam cooler I use will maintain 170F for over 3 hours if I tape around the seam with some masking tape.

I use two 55 gallon drums. They can either do water bath (I have a nifty little tap at the bottom to drain the hot water)or steam pasteurization; There's also a turkey fryer thermometer in the dead center of the barrel, so that I can constantly monitor the internal temps on the barrels. The hot water heater blankets on the outside keep the temps where I want them for about 5 hours with no additional propane heat needed from below once the desired temps are reached.

All you need is a water bath/canning pot, granite ware.
Load up quart jars with your bulk sub, and poke a hole in one of the lids for a good oven therm. Target sells a great oven therm with a temp alarm and timer.
Place the thermed jar in the middle of the canner, with water about 2/3 to 3/4 up the sides of your quarts.
When your thermed jar's temp rises above 140 you can start a timer for 90 minutes to 2 hours, though some do only an hour.
Remember, you want to maintain a temp as close to 160 without going over 170 for at least an hour.
Temps up to 170 are fine, but around 170 you begin to sterilize, a bad thing. Also, don't let it drop below 140.
When you are done, remove the lid with a hole and replace with a fresh lid.
A small brick of coir and about 8-10 quarts of verm, with 1-2 quarts of gypsum added yields about 20 quarts total.

I forgot about that one! Just before you go playing with that thermostat on the hot water heater, I would humbly suggest that you first turn off the breaker that supplies the power to that unit.
This will definitely be your best bet for the amount of substrate you are using. You can also use rubbermaid tubs with towels and blankets wrapped tightly around the tubs. Or a Coleman cooler... Light and Love, JD

I would also add that if you turn up the heat on the hot water heater and you live with other people that you let them know about it. Water at that temperature can cause severe burns within seconds.

I wouldnt use a pillow case because you lose important nutes. Also, hot water in a cooler doesnt seem to work well either. The water starts to cool before the time is up.

yeah, but you could go RR style, and just keep adding boiling water to it, and stirring, provided that your tank/reservoir or w/e yer using has enough space to add boiling water in intervals as temp dips

My shrooms definitely don't seem to be lacking any nutes both during growth and after I've eaten them And no, a well insulated cooler will maintain it's temperature for far longer than needed for complete pasteurization. Even with a cheap styrofoam cooler like the one I used in the link, the temperature only drops 5 degrees when I tape the seams. Give it a try, you'll see that I'm right.

I had a hard time getting enough water hot enough to pasteurize RR style. One big pot and my pc on the stove wasn't cutting it, so I bought a propane burner from the sportsman's warehouse. Set it out on the porch in sub zero weather, and it takes about 12 minutes to bring my big assed pot to a insanely rolling boil. I've never seen any amount of water boil the way it does on that burner. Definitely overkill, but I have all the boiling water I need, in minutes.

Remember, you don't want boiling water for pasteurization, water boils around 203, pure water 212.
Actually, did you know that pure H2O does not boil?
The only reason it bubbles and boils off is because of impurities in the water.
Pure water turns straight into steam at 212, without boiling.
But I digress, like I said 200+ is way too hot for pasteurization, hell you can about sterilize BRF at 200+.
Don't go over 170 or under 140 for 1-2 hours, and you will be golden.

No, it doesn't. You can however superheat distilled water to above the boiling point. But, all that is beside the point. I think I will go buy a 40 gallon cooler with a drain near the bottom so I can drain out water as I add more, and do like two batches of ~15-20 gallons at a time.
I do get concerned about leeching nutes out of the sub, but I really don't want to fill dozens and dozens of quart jars. I may reattempt oven bags, but they break so easily. Paint strainers have worked marvelously in place of pillowcases for me in the past. Does a bags mil measurement have anything to do with how much heat it can withstand? Are there any other 5+ gallon bags that I can use in place of those crappy oven bags?
Thanks for the input.

I think it would be very hard to test that theory, since pure water is such a pain in the dick to produce.
And the definition of pure water is called in here as well, I guess they call it ultra pure or heavy or something I cant remember, but they remove all the free oxygen and hydrogen particles out of solution for some reason.
Wow what a worthless post.
