I love these posts because I usually end up buying a book off of Amazon. I just ordered Dahlgren since it has been on my Wish list.
I've enjoyed many, but I have yet to consider one book the greatest I've ever read.
Ægypt - John Crowley One of the first books that I took the time to really try and understand all the references the author was making. This changed the way I read books.

The last book that made quite an impression on me is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
Best book of all time? I really can't choose. I'm inclined to say my childhood favorite Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, not any of the many later versions but the original one with all the theologic musings and procrastinations.
Quote:
Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published in 1719 and sometimes regarded as the first novel in English. The book is a fictional autobiography of the title character, an English castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical island, encountering natives, captives, and mutineers before being rescued.

But my favorite has to be A Confederacy of Dunces
I'm reading both those books right now, lolita for the 3rd time and A confederacy for the first.
Both are amazing, each on its own way.
I just think that Lolita is my favourite book because it reminds me how much I used to (still do?) love my ex.
Beautiful crazyness those 2 are.

eh I thought Ishmael was pretty juvenile, and I was 16 when I read it. My hippie English teacher recommended it to me, it had its moments, but come on...

House of Leaves By Mark Z. Danielewski
Crazy ass book written in an unusual format about a guys house that has bigger dimensions on the inside than on the outside. Very good book, well worth the read
