finally ive started
    #7927318 - 01/24/08 10:44 PM (16 years, 8 days ago)

i finally got started with my first grow. i went and found a hand blender to ground up my brown rice. it didnt work that great but i wanted to start up already because of the fact ive been waiting a lil longer than a month, and ive visited the shroomery everyday looking for more advice.

i ended up with somewhat brown rice/brf using the hand blender but i figured it would b okay since u can use the brown rice as a whole. i followed the 3 parts verm to 1 part brf to 1 part water and i feel the texture was good. ive seen the lets grow mushrooms video and from what i saw there they came out good. i filled the jars then put dry verm on top, followed by the lid and two pieces of foil. then into the pot they went, which brings me to where i am now, waiting an hour for them to sterilize.

hopefully i did everything right im pretty sure i did but ill wait and see. THX TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED WITH MY QUESTIONS, APPRECIATE IT.

Hmm...

Whole grain kernels (even rice) are slightly more difficult to sterilize then powders since a whole kernel has a inner side, boiling your cakes with "small" chunks of BR/F should work fine but the concept of powder is to hold the vermiculite in place since it does become pasty with the addition of moisture, allowing whole kernels (even if the cake holds together) when removed they could fall off from the outside (if there is any) and it could give way for contamination. If the cake itself is 100% colonized inside and out I do not see that being a problem.

I guess the main issue at hand would be the sterilization of chunky BR/F, I use to use a pepper grinder to grind down brown rice and then I'd filter out the large particles using a small tight mesh screen.

If your pressure cooking them I don't see a problem but simply boiling whole grains leaves doubt more so then certainly.

I think this is where RR should chime in with his wisdom.

P.S if the brf is actually that, powder then there is no need for heat to have to penetrate the inside of the kernel

thx for the insight, i must admit its not what i wanted to hear but it is appreciated ill make sure they are fully colonized and leave them for a few extra days to b sure. thx again for giving me the heads up since this is my first grow and im not 100 percent sure of what to expect. if it doesnt work out i have everything needed to try again, and possibly again.
