Applied for my first credit card
    #7927230 - 01/24/08 10:28 PM (16 years, 8 days ago)

Citi Platinum Select Mastercard. I have no credit rating yet, I plan on using this card just enough to start building some credit. I'm definitely gunna limit myself in using it.

If they accept my application that is...

Does it normally take the whole 30 days for them to review your application and accept/decline it, or do they normally contact you sooner than that?

you wont get accepted to a platinum card if you have no credit.

do what i did.. get the amazon student card through chase..

or get a walmart/target card.. you might not even be able to get one of them.

That first credit card is a bitch to get. Mine was a capitalone basic card with a 21% interest rate. Still have 550$ in credit debt that Im paying off.

Your best bet is to go to whomever you bank with and ask them to get you their starter/student card.

or you could open a bank account with key bank and they give you the option to sign up for a 500 limit credit card with no annual fee.

I tried for a WM card and was declined for even that without credit.

I second the plastic is evil sentiment. My family went through a major malfunction in which a failed business startup attempt caused over 20k in debt. Ended in bankrupsy and it's never been the same since with them.

If you want a damn near risk free way to get cred built up, apply for a cheap cell plan. Pay all your bills on time. Banks see that shit.

Citi Platinum Select Mastercard

It's listed there as a "No credit history" card.  It says credit needed is "New to Credit"   Dammit... So I'm going to have to wait all this time and probably end up having them tell me to fuck off?

I've had a few people tell me to avoid Chase cards.  I'm not sure why... ???

well it was the only one i can get.. i haven't had any problems with it as i pay everything off immediately.

that's really the best way to do it.

i'm probably gonna keep it though for online purchases..

thinking about getting a shell card or something.

Yep thats my intention.

Ya ya, I know what alot of you are thinking, "intentions aren't always followed through with"

But in all seriousness, I'm confident I can handle it without fucking up.

EDIT:  All I'm worried about right now is whether or not I'm wasting my time waiting for that Citi card to be approved...

The Amazon card was actually going to be my first choice, but I was told that Chase likes to fuck people over so I decided against that one...

Have you had any troubles with them before?

no.. actually they keep increasing my credit line and i dont even have to buy things/pay things off..

kinda nice actually..

up pretty high as of right now.

everyone else i know has had their parents help them out with starting a credit card and shit.. not me.. gotta do everything on my own.

dont put too many applications in though.. looks bad to companies..

i'd shoot one towards amazon though, not a bad card as long as you pay it off... their internet interface is pretty sweet as well. ok seriously bedtime.  goodnight

Once you've applied are you bound in any way to use the card? The specific card I applied for has no annual fee or set up fee. Does this mean if I DO get accepted I don't have to pay a thing until I actually use the card to buy something? Or do they have you confirm that you still want the card before they send it to you?

If I've got nothing to lose I'd like to go ahead and apply for the Amazon card. It would make me feel more at peace with the fact that the Citi card might not get approved. But I don't want to have to worry about paying two credit card bills, so I'm not sure what to do...

Anybody got any advice?

Also, I guess this topic should actually be in the Money Matters forum if the mods want to movie it?

Sorry if I came off harping on you dude. Just been in a serious debt situation before and it was fucking hellish. Not a thing I'd wish on anyone.

i think by applying for the card, they assume that you want it..

you dont have to worry about paying two bills if you dont charge anything on to them..

if i were you i'd wait for the citi one to come back, but i can already tell you you're not gonna get accepted for a platinum card with no credit.

that's like applying for the american express black card to buy groceries.

TRUTH:> Call them up on the phone and tell them you could agree to the contract if they gave you 5-7% they will hold you to talk with a supervisor and come back with a 9-15% rate..

9.5% is WAY better than 19.999% witch I've been seeing in the mail order category lately..and with the current recession it is happening right now no matter where you are.

Negotiation is the KEY. Call up 5-30 companies with this strategy to get your best rate.

No credit is BY FAR better than BAD CREDIT. DO NOT let yourself fall into this category. Pay the bills.

Yep. Use internet billing if you can. I get mail alerts when my statements are ready and when my bill is due in 7 days.

My credit score is around 740 right now, not too shabby considering the fact that I don't work... sorta.

I love credit cards. I get 1% back on everything I purchase, and 3% on groceries and gas.

It's not much, but my apartment complex and all my utilities take cards. It ends up being about 2-3k a month in bills. Over a year, I get paid about $500 for using a card to pay for things I would have purchased anyway.

Just pay it off in full each month. If you don't understand interest, and how credit cards work, you shouldn't have one.
