Are shrooming animals constantly taking heroic doses?

Think about it. Those pain in the ass foxes and raccoons and dogs, etc. who eat up on patches they come across. Do they think about how much is a good amount to eat? Or do they just chomp chomp chomp and spend the next period of time in a new universe?
Do they have bad trips?
Do they gain insight? Maybe they learn that the chipmunks are all uptight and the owls have it right. Or maybe they don't think of shit and just think of how fucked up they are.

I beleive psilocybin is produced to keep animals from eating them. I may be wrong though but I would think animals would be weary to eat them

Animals react differently. Some go totally mad while tripping, while others seek out mushrooms again and again after eating them once. I think, if psychedelics effect animals in even close to the same way as they effect us, it probably just becomes more painfully obvious to them that humans are stupid.

I'm guessing animals have learned over time to just stay away from eating mushrooms altogether. Some taste good and are okay to eat, but others make you sick or can kill you, while others make you go crazy.
That's about a 33% chance that you'll eat one that won't make you trip balls or kill you. If I was a chipmunk or a squirrel and did the math on my calculator and got those odds I'd stay away from mushrooms. Animals don't know the difference between mushrooms and which ones to eat and not eat anyway; so they might just steer clear of them altogether

The squirrels I have observed ate absolutely every single fungi in the vicinity. This included boletes, lepiota, chanterelles, chlorophyllum, cubensis, shiitake and LBMs. I really don't think they give a good goddamn.

Well just goes to show I don't know shit about squirrels then. If I was an animal I'd just not eat mushrooms....or then again maybe I wouldn't care because I would be too stupid to care. Either/or.

Mushrooms are a fabulous source of protein and fiber. They have only passive defense that can be evolved to overcome and once established they grow back predictably. They are easy to locate and harvest. The only reason NOT to eat them would be the potential of poisoning.

I don't believe that it would effect any species other than humans in a psychedelic way. Due to the fact of our Evolved/created minds, whichever outlook you have upon that aspect.
I believe humans are the only organism with an evolved consciousness that is able to process such a chemical.
These ideas of course just my own theory/opinion.

I'm pretty sure all mammals are effected by psilocin.

Affected != Tripping
Caffeine affects me. It raises my heartrate and constricts my blood vessels. Caffeine kills my cat. We are both affected by it but in different ways.
I agree with DuneRaver in the sense that humans and maybe primates are the only ones seeing sounds and hearing colors. I certainly wouldn't state that as a fact, tho. I've seen tripping felines and they were fucking wigging out.

we dont really process the chemical, its a foreign chemical in our brain and body works to eventually flush it out after a period of time, hence the end of a trip
and I agree with the other poster: I would think all mammal are affected by psilocybin if ingested. obviously they cant introspect like us but there would obviously be effects
this is all just me assuming a bunch of shit though

Actually, caffeine was a horrible example. A rather small amount will kill a human. I think I made the point, tho.

Well Reindeer are particularly fond of Amanita Muscaria. Going so far as to eat the urine of others that have eaten them already. Some anthropologists believe that reindeer herding was one of the introductions of mushrooms into shamanism, particularly that in Siberia.
