Tip of the day--insulin needle to hydrate cakes

Hi friends, I can't thank all the people enough who have contributed to this site. This forum is PURE GOLD, and thanks to all the knowledgeable people out there willing to share.
Here's my own innovation I've discovered with my cakes: while reading some older guidelines about at-home growing, I read about about drilling a hole into your cakes and using a straw to keep the middle hydrated. Fearing contamination, I thought of something else: I found out recently that my fat cat is diabetic, so I've been giving him insuling twice a day (go ahead and laugh, I know it's ridiculous), and accumulating all these used needles. So I decided to use them to inject filtered water into the cake, and I've gotten great results, no less than six flushes, with a few shrooms each time on my 4 oz. cakes.
I think the key is that the needles are very small and thin, much thinner than spore syringes that I've bought, so you're not poking giganic holes into the cake. A box of 100 cost $26 from the vet. Maybe pharmcies carry them too.
Happy trails, M

Have you experimented with different amounts? What seems to be the point where saturation occurs? I'm sure you can get them from the pharmacy but I don't think everybody feels comfortable asking for rigs. In a lot of places its no big deal though. If you could stick a straw down the middle, I doubt a 14g needle would be all that bad. I get about the same results you are describing with dunking for 24-48hrs between flushes.

I injected water into dehydrated cakes years ago (orig. PFtek) and noticed that when I injected water into the cake, a little geyser of water would erupt from the cake ..... like it was difficult for the fully colonized cake (that had already produced fruits and was dehydrated) to accept the water.
Hence .... the vermiculite reservoir in the center of the cake. The vermiculite reservoir can accept the re hydration.

Sorry to insult any veterans, I didn't know if this was well-known practice or not. I haven't read much outside of what's on this website, and the very basic growing guides.
The little tiny needles hold 1/2 CC. I usually inject 1/4 to 1/3 CC into each cake, at three different areas to distribute the water. I also get the geyser thing, the little bit of water that comes out as I remove the needle. The nice thing is that you can use your needle to suck that extra back up.
Thanks again for the input

also you dont need a drill for the straw method. you simply take a straw and push it into the cake. serves as a nice little water reservoir.

double end casing rules all. no need to bother with injecting. just keep top layer wet by saturating it everyday.
