It's called driver release. Nobody has to sign for it, just let them leave it there.
What unlucky bastards.

Good thing they got these criminals off the streets.
I would hate to think that my neighbors were smoking marijuana when they should be drinking alcohol.

On second thought though, I hope this case is thrown out of court because the package was originally refused. It never should have been reattempted, and I also don't think it should have been opened either. It should have just been returned to the sender.

The brother must have known what was in there, and not wanted to foot the bill if they got caught. Why else would you refuse a package for your brother I mean come on now? This story stinks of spin ne ways.

they probably put a bogus name on the package because (they somehow thought) the police wouldnt be able to track the owner if the contents were discovered. Also they could have put a non-existent return address, or none at all, which would be enough for UPS to think they could open the thing, especially if the guy at the address its sent to says somethin like "theres nobody here by that name...."...
Those guys had a real flimsy business structure being run there; with them being that risky we wouldve read about them sooner or later..

That was stupid that the person sending it required a signature in the 1st place. Unless specified they would have just left it on the porch. All because the brother's an idiot and forgot the fake name thing....

The sender has the option of requiring a signature or not. Had the sender chosen not to require a direct signature, the UPS man would've "driver released" it (left it at the door).
Since there was a conflict of recipient and address, the package was returned to the terminal to determine what they had gotten wrong. I'm sure that once the clerks discovered that the name didn't correspond with the address, and that it had to be signed by the recipient, it became suspicious.
That's how people fuck up. NEVER require direct signature.

Direct signature is a bitch. I'm also pretty sure that UPS drivers are SUPPOSED to attempt to obtain a signature for every package they deliver whether it is required or not. Many of them probably don't even bother trying to get a signature if its not required.
