do a search in this forum for linux mint. i did a review of it not too long ago. it is the distro i think most new linux users should use. it's ubuntu with all the codecs and good drivers included so you can play mp3s, watch dvds, etc.

once you get the hang of linux through mint, check out gentoo. just installing gentoo will be a crash course in linux. i just set up my ruby dev box with gentoo.

Yea I installed gentoo at some point recently to see how it is. The OS is alright, but I don't like how you update software. I think Im going to hit up Suse next, as the newest Ubuntu version is buggy

Install VMWare on Windows, then install Linux on a VMWare virtual machine. That way you'll have the best of both worlds and can minimize Linux to the task bar when you're not using it.

Or download and burn yourself a liveCD, pop it in your computer, reboot and enjoy trying linux without installing/partitioning/modifying anything.
Better yet, just download it and boot it directly inside VMWare, no CD burning needed.
I would recommend Gentoo LiveCD, or SLAX for its slick factor. Is there a Ubuntu LiveCD ? That would probably be great also.

Eh it fucked up some software because it didnt check for a dependency issue I think. I never had that problem with apt-get

Yea really Im not sure I know what the problem was. I just read on a forum that the gentoo system doesn't check dependencies so if something is updated, some other program might fail. Maybe thats a thing of the past, Im not entirely sure why my system fucked up
