A ? about a southern cal. mushroom
    #7920436 - 01/23/08 04:21 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

sorry no camera
searched google images and some other sites, no definite match
these grow at the base of eucalyptus trees, they r orange and get wavy, some clusters r 3 feet long, largest i,ve seen them get is about 4 inches across, they get blackened when hit by the sun, when bisected they have a dark coloring through the meat, there r alot of them out at the moment, what might they be, i,ll do the research from there

no, they stay dry, just turn very black, like hit with a blowtorch

are they found only in clusters?
do they grow on or near wood?

armillaria sounds like a solid possibility...

!!!!

That said, it would help if we had more information:

II. Accurate mushroom descriptions
It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:

        * Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
        * Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
        * Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
        * Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
        * Spore print color (very important!)
        * Color that the mushroom bruises
        * Scent of the mushroom
        * Anything else you might find important

For a template ID request please see this thread.

For more detailed guidelines for describing your finds, please view  this document.

For an explanation of mycological terms please refer to this document .

Kinda sounds like those jack'o lantern things.
Are they shaped like oyster mushrooms?

I think they are Jacks, I saw some other day near eucalyptus.

Getting a spore print would help.

yah thats what they r, looks exactly like the 4th photo on on the right, the reddish blackened 1,s, i,ll have to check them out in the dark and look for the glowing in the dark properties, incredulous that people mistake them for chanterels

yah i,m cognizant of how to do an id req. but i didnt have a pic anyways ,so i opted for brevity
