The Heavy Album Thread
#7924379 - 01/24/08 02:11 PM (16 years, 8 days ago) |
|

So stealing TrippinTeddy's idea for The Indie Album Thread, I decided to make a metal/hardcore thread. I used the indefinite adjective 'heavy' so we don't have to argue about whether something is or isn't considered 'metal', 'grindcore', etc. I'm sure there will probably be disagreements on what is considered 'heavy', but hopefully not so many.
On with the thread...

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
One of my top three all time favorites. If you haven't heard this album, you really don't know what you're missing. Warning: It will take time to grow on you.

I'm faaaaar too lazy to upload any fucking albums. I'll upload a song though. I was gonna go with Ed Gein, but I'm gonna go with The Locust instead, only because their songs titles are humorous.

That Locust song is off of Plague Soundscapes by the way.
Bah, fuck it, here's an Ed Gein song. Off of their self-titled EP.

The Fall of Troy - Döppelganger
It's hard to believe this band is a three-piece. This is their first album, and it's an interesting start. The Fall of Troy is more accessable than anyone posted so far. Chances are, you'll find something to like about them, no matter who you are. AMAZING GUITAR. Can't stress that enough.

Ahh it's easy. just right-click an album folder, and make a rar of it. Then upload it to divshare, and post it here. It requires virtually no effort! Where's b0red5tiff when you need him...

Every Time I Die - Hot Damn!
The first album I heard by these guys, and the last really good one in my opinion, this is their second full-length. The lyrics are great - the songs are more like short stories, filled with satire and clever quips. This mostly has to do with the fact that their lead singer is an English major. It's always great to find a kickass hardcore band with a healthy sense of humor. (see also: The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza)
Goddamn animal. You better watch where you spit.

In case anyone wants to contribute, here's how to do it.
Find an album on your hard drive. Right-click the album folder and click "Add to ______.rar". (If you don't have WinRar, you can find it here.) Go to divshare.com and register a free account. Then go to 'Upload.' Add the file and upload it. The file will take some time to upload, so you can browse the shroomery or whatever while it's doing its thing. When it's done, add the link here. Easy as pie.

Agents of Oblivion - Agents Of Oblivion
badass album. It is Acid Bath V2.0, which turned into Dead Boy and the Elephant Men. Acid Bath really doesnt do it for me, and dead boy is too slow, but this shit is an incredible album. every song on there is gold, and the very last one has a clip from Gummo in it. By the time you are done listening to this album you dont know if you should kill yourself, or someone else.
Dax Riggs is like the jeff buckley of metal, lyrically and vocally.

I think Deftones are pretty heavy. Cold is kind of heavy. Myself I am liking heavy melody and slow clunking crashing sunlight, a bit too late in the day to get one to rise, a bit too slow even the speed of light.

Demo-era Knights of the Abyss. You have no idea how good this shit is until you listen to it. Doesn't sound like any of thier newer stuff which kinda sucks.

"the apocalypse's doomy, amp-destroying fifth horseman...galloping mammoth metal" - SPIN
"unbelievably heavy...massive crunching riffs and drums that slam like vault doors" - REVOLVER
Massive power trio HIGH ON FIRE are a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume. Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE's MOTORHEAD-meets-SLAYER roar is outrageously loud and absolutely punishing. With Blessed Black Wings, guitarist / vocalist Matt Pike (ex-SLEEP) unleashes a devastating combination of bombastic guitar and howling war cries, weaving fantastical tales of supernatural beasts, forgotten battles and rivers of blood over an unstoppable bass and drum assault. HIGH ON FIRE are a class unto themselves, manhandling rock music while locking into grooves that transcend time.

This is just a taste of the Norweigian black metal band Emperor- if you like what you hear buy or illegally download the album on your own. A lot of people are turned off of black metal... but once you let it grow on you a bit you'll be in for a treat.
Majestic atmosphere, classical influences and brilliant song structures burried underneath razor sharp guitars and pounding drums = fucking epic.

I'm more a fan of Satyricon's earlier work (DMT, The Shadowthrone) but all their albums are pretty good. The composition started getting a little weak after Nemisis Divina, but its still worth listening to - especially because of Frost's brilliant performances. (I'm a drummer myself)
It's good to see some people on here appreciating this kind of metal, maybe i'll consider posting some of my own music in the near future. I'll be in the studio next month, so when shits ready i'll definatly put it up here.
