First grow (grow log)
    #7924279 - 01/24/08 01:36 PM (16 years, 8 days ago)

I'm using pf tek with b+, i used the recipe for 6 jars (3 cups verm 1.5 cups BRF 1.5 cups water), it seems like to little, but I'm gonna follow the guide as much as possible, also the substrate doesn't look airy and fluffy enough, its pretty packed together (i did not pack it) the flour made it sticky and the weight of it self packed it down maybe? just wondering if this is normal. I'll post some picture of the jars soon, i already sterilized them for 90 minits with steam from boiling water (i don't have a PC) and covered the lid some steam got out but I'm sure its normal, i removed the foil, dried the outside of the jars then bagged the jars in zip-lock baggies to ensure sterility, i have to wait a day or 2 for the spore syringes.

so thats how far i am, clean substrate and jars.

Those look really mushy to me. Perhaps there is too much water? Not sure.

i thought so, i got the info here http://www.shroomery.org/8410/Simple-Cubensis-Growing-Technique i think it should be lowered to one cup or maybe less.

should i just throw out the cakes and start over, or will the mycelium still grow like that? i know it "should" be airy but how will it effect the growth/time?

That looks like there is way too much water. I suggest starting over or the jars will take forever to colonize if they do at all.

try mixing then loading one jar at a time - if you do them all together it won't be as fluffy. your mycelium will also not grow as well if they are sealed like that in plastic - poke some holes in your lids and get some micropore tape on the holes to let the co2 out. since co2 is heavier than o2 you can turn your jars upside down once you see some colonization.

Okay, ignore all that. You can make large batches of jars as long as you use the right proportions. The part about plastic and micropore tape is good. And CO2 won't "leak" out of the jars. Also, CO2 is good for colonization so it's better to have it in than for it to "leak" out. And don't flip your jars. Leave them alone, let them colonize and forget about them for about two weeks.

way too mushy. when you mix the substrate, it should be very fluffy.
always make sure to add the flour LAST.

ok if it gets too soggy or mushy, just add a handfull or little bit of verm. myc needs little nooks and crannies and breathability.

don't inoculate those jars, that substrate is way off. it's much too wet.

You sure you used 2 parts vermiculite to 1 part BRF with 1 part water(aka 1/2 cup verm : 1/4 BRF : 60mL water)? It shouldn't be that wet at all- it looks like you used way too much water.

mix dry ingredients in a large bowl and then slowly add the water- that's how my monkey does it anyway. you could add the BRF last like someone else suggested, shouldn't really matter. It should just barely clump together in very small bits. you want it to look something more like this-

and this(^^) is with even more water than the PF recipe calls for (as more was added to compensate for microwave sterilization). and it's nowhere near as wet as yours- you must've used way too much water by accident.

not even. mine looks like powdered snow or some thing. or maybe because i use a bit coarser flour(self made) i get no mush at all. its all fluffy

not even what? not even clump at all, you mean? there's no mush at all in my monkey's containers and he uses homemade BRF too, fairly coarse as you can see in the pic.

but yes you're right with the snow description- you should be able to take a handful of the substrate and it should sprinkle/fall out of your hand when you are packing the jars...leaving lots of tiny air pockets. If you are spooning big wet clumps, you've done something wrong (aimed to the Original Poster).

my verm is big, but i grind it to a smaller size.

i think my substrate may look different to yours, because I use a bit more water because I microwave my substrate- I add extra water until it feels right (i've gotten used to the right moisture content/feel).

it's not mushy at all though- but small bits of BRF and verm will lightly clump into very loose-airy clumps the size of peas or smaller. when packing containers, i take handfuls and sprinkle it in (the clumps break up very easily, just from falling).

thank goodness you haven't inoculated yet.  start over as everyone has said.  and once you inoculate, don't put the jars in bags.  they need the holes open for gas exchange.  i don't even use micropore tape.  the layer of dry verm on top is their to stop any contams that try to get in.  good luck.

Is it possible that water was getting under your foil and into your jars?

Have you watched this?

yup iv;e watched all thoose 5 times haha.. i'm 100% postive no water got inside the jars during sterilization, i wont inoculate thoose at all i made some new cakes i feel are perfect very airy and fluffy. the recipe i used i found on this site as i linked to above for 6 jars (3cups verm1 1/2 cup brf and 1 1/2 cup water, maybe i read it wrong. thanks everyone for the support and help so far, i cant beilve i skrewed up so fast, i opend the jars and tried to tap then pound out the cakes and they wouldnt come out so i cut them out with a knife
thoose things were rock hard when i broke one in half there was no holes for myc to grow what so ever.. today i will sterilize my new cakes and tomorrow or when there completely cool'd i'll inoculate

thanks, i wouldnt have left the tape or bags on, im just trying to be extra carefull so contams dont get in before my spores do. should the cakes be breathing before i inoculate though?

I made 7 more cakes, they look really good to me so i dont think i'll add more pics. i steamd them for about an hour and a half in a regular pot, let them sit overnight then inoculated in a glove box with 2 ccS per jar 1/2 cc in each hole, im gonna keep them all in a shoebox on top of my xbox360 wich should heat it up to 75-85 (somewhere in that range) ill post pics as soon as i see some growth.
