Top and bottoms stopped colonizing
    #7923731 - 01/24/08 10:42 AM (16 years, 8 days ago)

So the VERY top (not the dry verm.) and the last half inch of my PF tek jars stopped colonizing. Now I see pins from inside the jar. What should I do? It's been almost a month and the bottom still isn't colonized

how often are you looking at them? how big are the holes in the lid of the jars? what temp are you incubating at?

turn it over and, in the palm of your hand, knock the cake down to give it a little gap between the bottom of the cake and the jar..

will give it room to breathe..

and keep it out of the light.. it should keep it from pinning.

I'll go ahead and say leave them alone for another month or until they start invitro pinning. If they start pinning take them out, scrape off uncolonized substrate, dunk and roll. If they aren't colonized by month two, repeat from the beginning . Oh and turning them over and hitting them, giving them "head room", or letting them colonize that last bit is bull shit. If the substrate is too dry, too wet, or too compact on the bottom you flipping the jar and hitting it won't change that. Just leave your jars alone.

I'll go with you, the reason it wasn't colonizing is because of dryness, not any other reason. What is invitro?

It can hurt. It stresses the myc and now all the water is draining towards your dry verm lay where it will create a wick for contams . But if guess if you kinda bump it off the bottom and then set it right side up it might release some of the pressure on bottom. I have some pint jars that are taking forever (mainly because they're pints). So much substrate causes compaction at the bottom. And I did bump my jars and turn them upside down till I saw RR saying that it was pointless. So now it's the waiting game for me . Got three in the FC though . Oh and invitro means before birth.

A jar of mine (I believe was too wet) stopped colonizing with an inch left. I whacked the cake loose, and it colonized the last bit. But, I think it colonized the surface first, then ate into the cake. I say this because when I chipped the (what I thought was) fully colonized cake, it looked tan, but turned white after 2 days.

But, I know that working with the cake helped it fully colonize. Now, maybe I was lucky, but that was my personal experience. Though, I didn't have any liquid to drip down and wet the vermiculite layer.

BlargIAmDead you don't know what you are talking about. dude flipping the jar is to let the built up water if it is to moist drain else ware, like to the already colonized cake where it wont hurt. Lots of water sitting in  uncolonized brf and verm is more of a contam risk then anything. It is also to allow o2 to get to the myc that is being smothered in co2 (co2 is heavier then o2). Which could be why it has slowed/stopped. So dude flip that shit and it should start taking off again in a couple of days, if everything else is right.temp NO LIGHT etc ...PEACE:cool:

So more pins are appearing. I very much doubt that the top or bottoms are going to colonize since there isn't any moisture. On monday if there still isn't any more colonization then I'm going to start fruiting

Ok so I am getting worried. More pins are forming. I can see the caps on them now and there are about 5 pins, the biggest one is about 3 cm, and the bottom and top are still not colonizing. Is there any way to add moisture to the jar? Or should I just birth it already?

just birth the cake and chop off the uncolonized portion then dunk and roll..

you can inject water into the jar, but it's kinda too late for that.

damn that sucks! dude just let it fruit in the jar.It is has already started. Just fill the jar with water put it in the frig and soak for 24 hours. Drain water out do a shake and bake verm lol
put some verm in the jar roll it around mist it to get the verm wet then just set it on a window seal some where and let it be. dude you got to think out side the box a lil peace
