Taxpayers would get checks under economic stimulus plan Story
Rebates for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes
NEW: Deal would give individuals $600, couples $1,200, sources say
NEW: Parents may get $300 more per child, sources say
GOP will allow rebates for people who don't pay income taxes, sources say
Democrats won't push food stamp aid hike, unemployment benefit extension
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- American taxpayers would get checks of several hundred dollars from the government under a plan to stimulate the economy, sources said Thursday.
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is the administration's point person for the economic stimulus plan.
Congressional leaders of both parties were talking with their membership to sell the plan, sources said.
Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said congressional and White House negotiators agreed upon checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple.
A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300.
Checks could be in taxpayers' mailboxes by June, according to an Associated Press report.
The Treasury Department still must analyze the numbers to determine the price tag of the stimulus package, sources said.
To get to the agreement, Democrats dropped calls for increases in food stamps and an extension of unemployment compensation. Republicans agreed to allow people who pay Social Security taxes but not income taxes to get the checks, sources said.
An announcement on the plan could come Thursday afternoon, the two sources said.
Aides in both parties said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has been working aggressively in recent days as he tries to make progress before House Republicans head out of Washington for a legislative retreat at the end of the week.
To win over conservatives, the package also is slated to include business tax breaks, according to officials in both parties.
The stimulus package may face resistance from fiscal conservatives in both parties over worries that it would increase the federal debt. The talks are occurring as auditors report that the federal deficit -- the difference between what the government takes in and what it spends -- is increasing.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated Wednesday the deficit would jump to $250 billion, mainly because of a weakening economy. That estimate does not include any additional spending that would be part of a stimulus package.
The proposal is intended to address economic worries stemming from a worldwide credit crunch created by the mortgage crisis and plunging stock markets. The president proposed the package last week. Watch a debate on whether the U.S. is heading into a recession »
Officials in both parties credited Paulson, the former Goldman Sachs executive known for a shrewd grasp of the markets, with pushing the package aggressively.
"He's been on the phone with practically every member of Congress -- some of them a few times," one Senate Republican aide said. "He's not fooling around." http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/01/24/economic.stimulus/index.html

It's not fair at all. My husband works hard and long 90 hr weeks for what he makes and pays in Income taxes and we will get back NONE of our money, yet people who don't work will get it instead.
It's not right. It's rewarding irresponsible behavior in the no income people and punishing responsible behavior in those who work hard to take good care of their families.
The nanny state is doing a BAD job of parenting it's citizens and if they keep it up, this country will end up with a bunch of demanding, lazy, and spoiled brats.
It's like
Ooooooohh Robby, look, your room is a pig sty and you have been watching TV all day. Johnny, you mowed the neighbors lawn, cleaned your room, walked the dog, took out the garbage and spent 3 hours on your homework.
Johnny, I am going to take some of the money you made mowing the neighbors lawn. I am going to buy Robby some ice cream with it because, he is crying and I want to make him feel better, and because the ice cream shop owner is hurting for business.
WTF is that???
It's bullshit!!!!

they should make it sporting for the low income non-tax paying folk.
the gov should put you in a clear tube, turn on a bunch of fans in the tube and drop the $600 in there, giving you 10 seconds to grab as much cash as you can.
put it on teevee and sell advertising. who wouldn't want to watch a crackhead in a tube of blowing Hamiltons?
IMO giving the money to the lower income people would stimulate the economy for about two days. the lower class will all buy flat screens from Wal-mart while a wealthy person would probably do something smart like invest it or something.

I really don't see this plan stimulating the economy for very long. What we need to do is tighten up our collective belts and get rid of all this debt.

How is randomly giving away money going to stimulate the economy? They'll get this money and end up paying it right back.

Seriously?
The plan (if it works or not...) is that you get money, you then spend it on some product/service you need which helps your personal economy. The person who receives the money does the same thing. Also every time it gets spent it gets taxed, so eventually it does all go back but it does useful work on the way helping peoples lives. Thats the plan at least... I guess... Doesnt really sound like a good idea to me.

It's not good in that they have to print more money to do this. That will create inflation. What you thought you gained today with the perk, will be lost tenfold up the road, when prices go up to adjust for the extra money added to the market.
People will get a short term quick fix though and pay for it later in an inflation tax and never put two and two together because no one teaches them how this works. Or, they may understand it, but are just immediate gratification, buy now pay later types that don't care.
How much will this money really help to make the difference for people?
Paul keeps trying to tell everyone that these short term fixes make the long term problem, worse.
It's ultimately exacerbating the problem it is trying to fix.

I do my part to combat inflation... I shop at Wal-Mart and I vote no on raising the minimum wage.

My first boyfriend was an Econ major, and once (just to push his buttons) I suggested that the government should print up lots of $$ and drop them by airplane into impoverished areas. His head nearly exploded, and he immediately went into a rant about why this would not work. Guess Bush didn't take Economics in school.

The main argument I have heard against this idea is that most people will use the $$ to pay off debts.

90% of the money that is returned to the people will be spent on products made overseas (China) anyways. How the fuck will that stimulate our economy?
