debate board
    #7922542 - 01/23/08 11:13 PM (16 years, 9 days ago)

Should the Shroomery have a board specifically designated for the art and pleasure of debate?
Debate board?
You may choose only one

Philosophy & Sarcasm?

P&S is just about the least spiritual board we have, unless nihilism and debunking other peoples beliefs is considered a form of Spirituality.

P&S isn't a debate board, not in the sense I believe the OP intends it.

But what would the Debate Forum debate about? Debate about debating?

We could hold debating contests, and the winners would be titled "Master Debaters".

At least it has some basis in reality. There is no truth to be found in burying your head in the sand and refusing to look at anything that might be contrary to your world view.

P&S could be called the Waterboard forum.

In P&S there is a tendency to consider anything that doesn't follow the nihilist interpretation of science is inherently incorrect. Ideas aren't engaged there, they are shot down from the very start.

"What if.."
"No there is nothing."

Thats not openmindedness. The Mysticism forum was created for a reason, and the only reason it is "debate free" is to prevent the few people who invariably debunk everything in P&S from invariably debunking anything they say, and with that infringe on their freedom of speech.

You can't disprove or prove God, but P&S is anti-God
You can't disprove or prove religion, but P&S is anti-religion

Its pseudoscience with a nihilist inclination. No feelings, just logic. Thread after thread of people who all feel something sucks and are exchanging their reasons why it sucks. Thats not debate, its negativism. It would be emo if emotions weren't repressed.

I just don't understand how you people can be so offended by someone else pointing out why something just isn't feasible...

I mean, if you you think you see a Yeti in some rock outcrop on Mars, thats all fine and dandy. But why should you be so defensive when someone else says that yes, its probably a rock outcrop. Why should reality be ruthlessly quashed in order to propagate fantasy and supertition?

You can say "Thats just your view", or "Thats one reality", but the fact is that some things are true and some things are false. Either its a rock outcrop or its a fucking yeti. There is not some Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle of UFOs and Xenobiology. Things are not one thing to one person and one thing to another. Things either ARE, or ARE NOT.

I always think its funny how philosophizing nuts and religious kooks say we should have open minds, but when pointed towards information which may prove them to be wrong they cry "Foul" and run screaming away towards the nearest source of disinformation and comfy-cozy nonsense.

Who decides what's feasible? Feasibility is totally subjective.

I'm the OP and I spend a lot of time on P&S. Debate is an integral part of what P&S is all about, and it wouldn't be worth going to without it. However, it appears some people go there just for the sake of the debate. Being that debate is a perfectly valid pursuit without spiritual and philosophical underpinnings, I think P&S (and the Shroomery in general) could benefit from a debate forum.

Well, I officially give up on this. Nobody has bothered to actually read every word of my posts on the subject. I ENJOY debate being a part of P&S and I've said it a billion fucking times. I wouldn't like P&S if people didn't tell me I was wrong there. I've always accepted it when I was truly wrong there and revised my positions accordingly. That doesn't make it "The Debate Forum." Is political discussion "The Debate Forum?" No. And neither is P&S. But even the moderators tell me I'm full of shit without trying to understand my point. Glossing over important individual words, jumping to conclusions and then telling me I'm wrong based on those conclusions is poor debate, anyway. This is BS.

How does this infringe upon their freedom of speech? Are their posts deleted? Are they forced to hold back their thoughts? You are confusing freedom of speech with freedom from consequences of one's speech.

The trick is to use their own tools against them. I promise that P&S will be seeing more formal critique of the critiques of the master debaters.
