the months of december january and febuary are good for finding dung loving shrooms in the tampa area, in smaller amounts then in the summertime but the weather is perfection for hunting compared to the summer. and no bugs.
someone over at mycotopia's hunting forum posted a photograph of Psilocybe cubensis, Panaeolus cyanescens and Panaeolus subbalteatus, all found in the same florida cow pasture. from today.

cpkai75, the spore prints for Psilocybe cubensis turn out dark-purple. sometimes dark purplish-chocolate.

Congrats on your find. This winter, I had not been able to devote time to hunt. It probably is over for me until this spring. I am glad that some else is having success. I have never tried hunting this late in the season so I do not know if they are in my area. The latest I have found shrooms is Xmas time last year. I do know that they start popping up around April. Continued Good Luck!

they are out there right, now, just in small numbers
if you do not find at least one shroom after a hour in one field then try another
Copelandia mushrooms are more common then Cubensis in the tampa area during the winter months.

Copelandia mushrooms grow from cow dung also. They are smaller in stature, but are usually around 3 times as potent as Cubensis by weight. Copelandia do not have veils. Do a image search or something to get a idea what they look like. Basically every single Copelandia will bruise the color blue whether provoked or not.
No i never wrote a website, just contributed to others.
If you spend enough time looking for shrooms in the tampa area right now you will find them. Check different pastures until you stumble upon some. You can find them at night time easily also. If you do not find any types of mushrooms within 30-60 minutes, try another field and so on until you bump into them.

no not libertys, not at all, nothing like that grows in florida.
probably the most common names i have heard for Cubensis in Florida is Purple Ringers and Gold Tops. Most shroomers in Florida have no idea what a Cube is or Cubensis. And most do not know about Copelandia mushrooms and just pass them up.
you can easily find Cubensis and Copelandia even when the Moon is not shining. They sort of glow. Often you will see white debris, garbage and whatnot that will fake you out, but when you see the actual shroom caps in the dark there really is little doubt.

hard to say matt. usually during the winter the manure droppings will retain enough moisture for the mushrooms to fruit even if it does not rain. during the summer time it can rain a inch and then the sun will make everything dry as a bone again in a hour sometimes.
my observation has been that during the summer if it rains too much or if their is a hurricane the mushrooms will hault in growth until conditions are favorable again. but during the winter if it rains even a few days in a row the dung loving mushrooms will hault fruiting again until it dries up some again. but not always, basically they fruit whenever they want to.
my friend who photographed that image said it has not rained for a few days now after several days of raining everyday, so, it is probably a decent time. a person will either find shrooms or they will not. it all depends on being in the right place at the right time, and the more a person practices at it the more successful they will be. but, nobody finds shrooms every time they look.

it is not too cold matt. if they are not growing in one pasture, then try another one.
"the only few i found were not edible."
finding those in a florida cow pasture is just about as common as finding psychoactive ones. actually, it is usually easier to find psychoactive shrooms in those pastures then anything else. so, you are on the right track, just keep looking, try different pastures.

pay attention to the grass in the fields. after a while a person can just eyeball a pasture and get a pretty good idea if much of anything good grows there. obviously lush green grass is a plus. pastures that are well grazed by the cows is another key observation to make. well grazed (meaning the grass is only 1 or 2 inches tall) and spots or clumps of greener grass where a deteriating cow patties nutrients made the grass grow faster and greener is another equally important thing to look for.
longer grass or weeds are not areas to spend much time looking.
during the summer time look underneath trees and tree lines (or drip lines/field forest interfaces) for shrooms, for the most part.
during the winter time look in the open pastures (away from any trees or shade) for shrooms, for the most part.

matt, shrooms will grow in your area even after the ground frosts, which only happens about once a year near tampa, usually in december. they are out there right now. not in huge numbers, but they are growing. christmas and new years used to be my favorite days to hunt pasture shrooms in that area. often they are unpredictable. a person can find one shroom after a hour of looking in one pasture then (occasionally) go a half mile down the road and find a pound or two. the winter shrooms in that area usually start around november and last until febuary, then they practically disappear until june. but in that area i have found them every month of the year.

alright see thats another thing. in the summer there was tall grass in my main pasture now there is none. an i was looking around tree lines that info is very helpful. i am really glad i joined this forum bc you have taught me alot. i noticed the shrooms that i did see were out in the open. i could see why they would grow out in the open during winter tho. makes since. i think winter has hit its point around here. pretty sure its gona be warm for the most part from here on out. it just doesent make since to me bc i found this field last year. i picked bags full every time i went. now there is none. an i dont think its shroomed out bc as far as i know there is only one other person that knows where it is. thanks for the help guys.

yes good luck with the move.
april always seems to be the driest month for in that area. the grass in the pastures become a scorched brownish color by april (from too much sun and no rain). and it does not really start raining until late may and the shrooms do not start fruiting until june, usually. strange enough, i hunted there for 9 seasons, and every year the summer shroom season would start a week later then the previous year for some reason. i started noticing summer shrooms around early-may and by the time i left the state they were not begining until late-june/early-july. my guess is from over crowding and Entirely too much developement. the ecosystem of the sunshine state seems quite fragile to me. 'you build a huge interstate (alligator alley) that passes directly through The Everglades, and you destroy one of the worlds greatest ecological purifiers of the earth. 'kills (killed) all the Florida Panthers also.. the more they develope and construct the less it rains. a lot of elderly natives have told me it used to rain almost every day in the state of florida.

matt, if you are driving around when the sun is just rising and driving by pastures in the winter time, (it is odd), there will be a thick layer of fog about ten feet tall in every pasture you drive by but no where else really. just a observation i made, and i never quite understood why that happens. but i do know that is a big part of the reason why it does not need to rain during the winter for the pasture shrooms to grow. there will be fog scattered in other areas, but it is blatently obvious that every pasture has a blanket of fog but really no where else.

Cubie, not many leo's in the state of Florida are very lenient (or inclined not to be harsh, strict or merciful) when they catch a person trespassing, especially for mushrooms in a pasture. They can and will drag people in for it. Cultivating psychoactive mushrooms in the sunshine state is as illegal as anywhere else. Possessing dried and/or packaged psychoactive mushrooms is also highly illegal. To get a better understanding of the law in the state, research Fiske vs. The State of Florida (1978) at your local judicial centers legal library, or at the North Florida Shroom Guide online. But that, is not really how it is done all of the time. Some counties in Florida charge mushroom hunters who get caught, with possession of Psilocybin (and in one case I remember possession of LSD). It is rare, and usually a person is only charged with trespassing on private property (which is stiff enough) and any other charges that they can think of (they can "think" up a lot). If anyone ever runs into that type of scenario I recommend not reciting any laws to the people who enforce the law (one reason is because 99% of Florida law enforcement officers are not even familiar with the state shroom laws). In order for the Fiske vs. The State of Florida (1978) to protect a person once they go in front of a judge they must claim during the incident that they "unknowingly" were in possession of such mushrooms. In other words, a person must say that they were collecting "edibles", and not many people are going to really believe that (especially after the chemical analysis done at their crime lab comes back positive for Psilocine), not even a judge. . . .

Nice finds by the way. I need to go check my usual fields soon. I thought with the hard freeze that Central Florida got this year that it might hurt the shroomies...but these pics have gave me the kick in the pants that I need to get out there and hunt some down. I know the cope's should be fruiting...and now these cube pics...I can't wait...need shrooms
