WBS: When to open PC and shake?

Ello fellaz,
First, let me thank everyone here on these forums for being so active, helpful, detailed blah blah blah
Now for the question:
When should I open the PC and shake my jars if I'm using Doc's WBS Tek?
I've heard that opening the PC to soon will cause the water in the jars to boil violently and could prove quite dangerous.
My PC is a Presto 16Qt and it takes HOURS for that thing to cool down to the point that I can touch the metal with bare hands.
Obviously I don't want to open the PC before all pressure is gone but should I open it immediately after?
Also, is there a safer way than just holding on for dear life with some fluffy pot-holders when i shake the crap outta the jars?
Seems like they could easily go air-born.
Thanks guys!

When the PC is room temp, usually 12-24 hours.

That's if you open it when it's still under pressure. Don't open your PC until the next day. It helps keep a vacuum from being formed and sucking contams into your jars. I don't know much about WBS, but do you need to shake the jars right after sterilization or something, to keep it from clumping? You shake jars during colonization...

My pc has a pop up locking mechanism. When that little pop up drops back down, it lets me know that the pressure inside is equal to the pressure outside. You can open it up, but it is still hot as hell. I recommend just waiting overnight until it is at room temperature. The lids I put on my jars have 4 holes already on them for inoculation, I just put foil on them so that moisture doesn't get in them. The holes on the lids prevent the vacuum from forming,(no contams being sucked in). If you do use lids without hole and you do form a vacuum, then make sure you open them in a glove box.

As soon as you can. Let the pressure drop, get some heavy towels and shake the shit outa them ASAP. Then you can put them back in overnight to cool down. But, the second you can shake after Pcing is the best imo.
I don't like the texture of grains that settle all night without shaking. The texture of grains that sit, testing eachother structural integrity over night bothers me, and side by side, anyone could tell a major difference. The grains flex under the wait of themselvs, and I like to try and limit that.
If your rocker is off the PC and theres no pressure your good.
The jars are hot to the touch, and when you shake them they will get a little hotter, so be safe and ready for that.
I have noticed that my wheat and milo grains bleed 'starchyness' if I let them stay in the PC to cool off without shaking first (and sometimes the dye in the milo berries bleed pink and red)
Though with WBS and millet I have noticed no difference.
Man, anytime there is PC saftey talk, it makes me remember that my grandmas aunt died from a PC that popped in her face and put the lid into the roof.... and to make it even more weird, her mother died in 1901 from eating mushrooms they used to pick for dinner, and getting some baddies.

Bottom line, wait until your PC cool down completely.

I see no benefit in opening a PC until it's cooled down. Properly prepared grains do not need to be shaken until inoculation. I've let them sit for several days before, and when I turn the jar upside down, the grains fall from gravity to the other side. No shaking required. RR

Wow lots of advice! Thanks fellaz!
I just noticed 6T and Doc's WBS tek both suggest shaking before cooling to distribute the water/wet bird seed more uniformly. Their reasoning is that the bird seed tends to clump after it cools if you wait.
But if I can wait, I think I should.
I like the security of keeping the jars in a 100% sterile environment until inoculation anyway.
Thanks again all!

I dont know exactly what the tek is so i cant give you the best answer but in my opinion if you soak the bird seed that maybe this tek so in that case this is what i use on a regular basis if you soak it over nigh t then you can leave it sit to cool before you shake it only if you have rinsed it out well enough that it runs clear if you didnt rinse it well then it will be sticky and need to be shakin right away. Like RR said i can lift my jars upside down and watch the millet fall, now I did notice another method of doing birdseed this is where you add half as much water to the jar with out soaking, if this is the method i would suggest shaking right away i find that one cause alot of clumpyness since it does not go through as much cleaning procedures as some of the others. I personally use the method out of RR's video for making perfect grain spawn has worked ever single time for me and helped me alot so if you have any questions i would be more then willing i do alot of bird seed for myself and for others. If you have a chance get the RR videos as well the key to making a perfect grain spawn is in there also works just as well for WBS. Thanks alot
