Motherboard trouble?
    #7920876 - 01/23/08 05:44 PM (16 years, 9 days ago)

I've got a machine here with an ABIT KT7A Socket A 462 Motherboard, and recently decided to put my swappable harddrive bay to use in the tower. I forgot to switch the jumper settings on the internal HDD to slave, thus making two master harddrives connected to the board. As it was going through the POST screen, I noticed some strange characters at the very bottom. Some of which were highlighted, which isn't normal. Right as I noticed this, the computer shut off and since then, I've been unable to get it to work. I'm not sure if something fried or what. It turns on, but nothing happens, not even the usual POST beep. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong? I've disconnected all the drives just to see if that would help, and no avail. I've also taken a long look at the board itself to see if there were any blown capacitors or anything of the sort, but everything seems to be ship-shape. Taking the battery on the board itself out (in hopes of resetting the BIOS), didn't help at all either.

Anyone have any advice?

Sounds like a dead PSU.

Well, it's no Aptiva, so it'll suffice for now. I only use it for recording and downloading music, and that doesn't use system resources too much.

Anyway, how could it be the power supply? It turns on.. just.. nothing happens.

Meh, I'll try another power supply and see if that helps, though..

Really? Anytime I have seen odd characters on the bios screen it has been one of two things... bad CPU or bad/unseated memory. I've seldom had a bad power supply allow a computer to almost work.

I would start by removing all the cards and devices that you can, and then reseating (unplug, then replug) all the cables and memory. If it works, then add the cards and devices back, one at a time, testing each time. My guess is that you knocked a cable (or more likely memory) loose while working in the machine.

You're right Seuss, I sort of read the part after ^^ fast. I thought it was a paperweight.
On another note though, wouldn't bad memory/CPU give error codes regardless? (beeps)

ProoN does yours have a small LED type display on the motherboard? This might tell you exactly what the problem is.

Bad memory, sometimes, but not always. I have seen half-seated memory do some odd things. I've never seen a cpu report bad with error beeps... though to be fair, the cpu seems to be the lowest failure part in any computer.

Thanks for pointing that bit above out. I had missed it. Power supply or logic board, usually... and in a very few cases, power button.

Just an update:

I took all of the cards (minus the video card) and memory sticks out, unplugged the harddrives and CD drive, turned it on to see if it would work. IT DID. And then one by one, I started adding everything else and hooking all the drives back up in hopes of pinpointing the problem. Turns out, the modem was tripping everything else out somehow. I put it in all the other slots to see if it was just one in particular, but it's the modem itself, which I never used anyway. So, I've got everything back up and running now. Appreciate the advice from everyone, especially Seuss. I was considering getting a brand new motherboard. hah.

Funny part is, now that you bring it up, I actually had this exact same scenario happen to me a while back on a really old PC. (i was moving parts from an IBM over to a custom PC a few years back).  Couldn't figure out wtf the problem was until i finaly did exactly as you and it came down to the same thing...the modem.

Very welcome.

I would have paid to see your face when it clicked on the first time after removing all the stuff.

Yeah, it was more or a less a "No fucking way" reaction. This thing has been inoperable for about a month prior to last night, because I was sure the problem was the result of a blown capacitor, so I was just trying to find one that entire time.

Seems to always be something really simple that I wouldn't even think of that goes wrong. My bad habit of over-thinking seems to be a curse. hah. Good times!
