peruvianus question (SOLVED)
    #7919572 - 01/23/08 12:00 PM (16 years, 9 days ago)

ok, so the nursery where i found the pedros has some other cacti that are very suspicious and look like peruvianus. can some one post a good pic of a regular peruvianus and tell me what color the aeroles and spines should be? also if there are other characteristics i should look for?

thanks

T. peruvianus has longer spines than T. pachanio.

T. peruvianus often has V-shapped notchs, while T. panchianio has horizontal (sometimes V-shapped) depressions just above the areole.

T. peruvianus has a long central spine which DOES NOT swell at the base.

The best thing to do is look at pics.

Watch out for T. cuzcoensis!

Here's a "True Blue" T. peruvianus! :smirk:

One good indicator that it isn't a cuzocoensis is cuzocensis's are rarly blue...

yup.Peruvians are bluish-green in colour, with frosted stems, and 6-8 broadly rounded ribs; it has large, white flowers. Groups of 6-8 honey-coloured to brown rigid spines, up to 4 cm in length, with most about 1 cm, are located at the nodes, which are evenly spaced along the ribs, up to approximately 2.5 cm apart.

A short-spined variant which is nearly identical in appearance to its relative, Echinopsis pachanoi (San Pedro cactus), is known. It is therefore possible that many misidentified plants are being sold (both as Peruvian Torch and as San Pedro), but since local variations as well as hybrids do exist (both cultivated and natural), this will obviously make proper identification difficult.

Is the change to Echinopsis offical now?

Shoot... might as well order one online or buy some seeds. Growing from seed is mighty fun. :yesnod:
