Hole location in a monotub
    #7918886 - 01/23/08 06:42 AM (16 years, 9 days ago)

I didn't have quite enough substrate to come up to the bottom holes of an old monotub I had laying around. All the substrate colonized nicely but after I cased the tub there is still about a 1" gap between the top of the casing layer and the bottom of the bottom holes in the tub. Is that too much of a gap to allow the CO2 to escape? If that gap is not sufficient the only correction I can think of is to drill 1/4" holes at the top of the casing layer...

The purpose of a monotub is to not have to deal with fanning and misting. It follows the same ideals as the Showtime Rotisserie, set it and forget it... I think I will drill some small holes at the top of the casing layer to let the CO2 escape. Thanks for the info...

I followed monstermitch's tek when I built the tub about a year ago. I am re-using the tub for another round. The only thing is that I didn't have enough substrate to reach the lower holes so I believe there will be about a 1" layer of CO2 laying on top of the casing layer. I went ahead and drilled (4) 1/4" holes on each vertical side of the tub right at the top of the casing layer and filled them with polyfill. Hopefully that will be enough to allow the CO2 to escape.
