Just a new poster saying hey mostly. I stumbled onto you guys in some drunken random fashion that started with Erowid and the PF guide. I was thoroughly inspired by that guide and came here seeking both new amigos and perhaps advice further down the road. I've a feeling I'll need that much. So mostly, this is just a bloated hello. Wish me luck on my upcoming trials and tribulations though. I've got a feeling I'll need it. Here's to n00bish fervor that inexorably leads to success!

I've been basically a full time Dungeon Master for about 14 years now, generally sticking with AD&D second edition, and Hackmaster (which is a variation, with a little more revelance towards 3rd. Ed. d20 system)
I've done my fair share of being a player, however it kind of bores the shit out of me, so I currently only DM, on a very in depth planet I've been adding to since, well for 14 years. (I have a universe outline at this point, actually)
D&D is a psychedelic to me, all the way: Quantum Linear Storytelling/Psychedelic Interactive Storytelling. Many parrellels to Shamanism, methinks.

Second edition? Get with the times, dude, we're on fucking 3.5.
That being said, I've got AD&D on Intellivision.
In addition, to the OP, you'd better post some pics or you're a narc.
Make sure you edit out the thing that digital cameras put on that shit though or you're fucked and the cops will know where you live, man.
PEACE.
(P.S. I hate 3.5 it's a waste of money for the same books as 3.0 with extremely minor changes and some new pictures.)

Gawd. I fucking hate forum avatars. I suppose being visually impaired has something to do with that.
And WotC is now a capitalist, money-grubbing nasty churning machine hellbent on making us piss away our hard-earned cash on more and more that... well... we don't need. I don't buy books though... thanks to the above stated condition. Yay internet piracy!

I like the vintage feel of 2nd ed. better than 3rd ed. vibe of "Fight. Level up. Repeat"; 3rd ed. gave off the "this game is mostly about combat, which turned me off" That is a completely personal opinion though, and I can certainly see how I could be naive, wrong, or ignant. I'm the goddamn DM though! ;-)
Really doesn't matter which system you use, IMO. Hell, a DM who knows what he is doing will very rarely even consult the rule book.

Damn straight.
I usually hold off on the combat so it's a GOOD IMPACT when I use it. D&D is supposed to be about roleplaying and I'll give as much experience (if not more) for coming up with clever ways to AVOID combat than to actually have to roll for initiative. If you can trick some bastards into thinking their own guards let you in for an audience with them, hell yes, that's good roleplaying, especially if you have a decent diplomacy skill.
Combat is overused. Back to basics and it's a roleplaying game.
I think D20 makes things pretty simple though.
"Which die do I use?" (says the n00b)
"Roll 1d20" (says me)

If only my shitty group full of burnouts actually subscribed to such notions. Let's just say the DM that usually runs has a fetish for model trains, if you know what I mean. Winds up pretty boring... but it's an excuse to drink a Newcastle and hang with everyone... so all's good.

Man, we have a no drinking rule around my sessions. After one night with hardcore nerds and too much vodka...
Gotta draw a line when the rogue starts failing sleight of hand checks on purpose.

Smoking a blunt DURING the session can be almost religious, but I'm NOT A LARPer!!! Once you take the dice away it's just makebelive! One of my favorite characters so far (who didn't make it) from years ago was a pyromaniac halfling thief named Bart Burntfoot, He had an awesome streek of six bar burnings, and too numerous a vicious hobo beating. Was I just playing out what I wanted to do? Cause If you roleplay and aren't a badass then what are you doing?
