Day 1 - Making up the jars

How is it looking?
The tinfoil, even the folded double lid layer, still has the ability to move around right? I'm not meant to have it sitting there stuck on somehow am I? After all its tin foil on glass...
Is the vermiculite to large? I took a guess at it being within the medium sized range and its the only type I could find in my city after looking for a long time...

Your substrate looks a little chunky imo. Good luck using the glass's, alot of people use them but Id say you will have to be extra careful not to knock off the tinfoil lids.

Thanks. I'm not very practical and will probably fuck it first time around.

Yeah thought it might be, only stuff I could find but. What problems might I expect?

Will a rubber band hold up in that heat ? Are you going to boil them or pressure cook them ? Either will work for BRF cakes but PCing is the best method. Invest 10 dollars into a case of Wide Mouth Mason Jars/Canning Jars. You can pick these up at Wally World,Hardware stores,Gardening stores, and some Groceries stores.
One more question...Where did you acquire your rice flour ? How much did you pay ? I only ask because they look like very small bags and you can get Organic Rye Flour at Walmart 30oz for 1.66 its a great bargain

Just going to do the steaming pot method, if that falls to pieces I will invest in a cheap pressure cooker.
I can't find the jars anywhere, south of the equator so none of those franchises are around but all garden/cooking/hardware/etc have nothing even remotely close to empty shoulderless metal lid jars, the closest I came had plastic snap on or screw lids.
The br flour was from a health food shop, pretty expensive about $4/5 a bag.
If there are any Aussies lerking maybe they can point me to a shop that has good half pint/250ml jars

Ah sorry I didn't know where you lived lol. Yeah I guess I can't help much with that but maybe someone does live there and I know there are a few around the shroomery they might be able to tell you were to get stuff. If you can find the jars with plastic screw on lids you can use them.I have plastic jar lids on mine because they don't rust. Just cover in Tinfoil.

The chunky should be fine. It definitely won't slow down growth because of compacted substrate. You can get it finer with a coffee grinder or blender. Let us know how it grows

Day Two - Making syringes

Well this was a bit of a disaster.
I used this method http://www.shroomery.org/8403/Psilocybers-Syringe-Tek
But next time round I will be using this one http://www.shroomery.org/8405/How-to-make-a-spore-syringe
I think the pictures speak for themselves, a lot of spore clumping and excess left over in a little bit of water.
The second syrgine (on the right of the comparison picture) was a lot better than the first. The first is much more clear but spores are visible inside. Should I use both?
Also keep in mind this is an experiment in a first timers cheap and lazy grow which means there is no inoculation loop but rather an alcohol rubbed tip of a butter knife and there is no glove box and other nice things.
I tried to be as sterile as possible. Rubbed the surface area with metho spirits, turned the air con off, wiped down the glasses, washed hands, fire on the syringes, etc.
Thanks for all the responses so far

You can have those jars sent to you over the internet. That is some crazy chunk verm. You could name an ice cream flavor after that stuff it's so chunky! I would definitely build yourself a glove box for the next time around. It would serve you well for a long time and make your results far better. Was your water sterilized to make your syringes? Next time a couple of drops of Jet-dry dishwasher liquid to the water before you sterilize it for your syringe water. This will eliminate the clumping of your spores by making things more viscous. Good luck keep us informed!

Yep the water was boiled and then sucked into the syringe, left to sit for a minute or two then squirted out into the sink, repeat a couple of times and then finally sucked up and left in there until it cooled. The syringes themselves were fresh out of packets so I guess just sucking up boiling water once and leaving it to cool would have done.

Well many things made me think this was a semi risky but viable option including this for example

Another important question...
Its summer here and the digital gauge in my room shows that the room is 21-27°C (70-81°F). 27ish in the day and around 21 through the night.
Will cakes need to be incubated given that the natural temperature is pretty much exactly what the incubator would be trying to achieve?
At a guess I would say the incubation is more aimed at people in colder climates and that it will only increase the temperature too much.

Next time you make brf cakes try adding the water to the verm and then ad the brf. That will eliminate the chunks.
