Thank you for presenting a intelligent and informed opposing opinion.
I believe you're partially right, however there are a lot of people who do worship him and treat him as a sort of god, like people do with any celebrity. It comes with the territory I guess.
To me, however, that sort of placing someone on a pedestal sort of cheapens their work and even their persona. I am immediately put off by Alex Grey because of fans like notapillow.
I see your point of view and I think it's valid in its own respect.
Just like there is a person glorifying Jessica Alba and hanging up posters of her above their bed, so is there somebody making a shrine for Alex Grey.
Although that's actually a bad comparison. Visionary Art and Acting are not exactly in the same boat. But celebrity status is still there, whether it's found on mainstream television or in the psychedelic subculture.
Personally, I appreciate Alex's work for it has helped me cultivate my own style in art. I also draw some of my inspirations from Larry Carlson. I love Dali as well!
I'll close this with "Great ideas, but no ideals."

He was not putting alex on a pedestal merely saying he admires his art, Which is the entire reason alex does his art in the first place.
Right, but notapillow called me "not smart" basically a thinly veiled way of saying "stupid" because he did not agree with my opinion.
He went on to say that because I did not appreciate Alex Grey's art in the same way as he, I didn't "get" art in general.
To me that's quite off-putting to hear from a fan... and it sure makes it seem like he's putting him on a pedestal, regardless of whether or not that is actually the case.
I was reading his posts and was in fact quoting them. He, however, was not attacking my arguments, he was attacking me personally. In debate this is known as Argumentum ad hominem and is a logical fallacy and makes you look really immature if you attempt to pull that off in a real debate.
Which, in essence is why fans like notapillow put me off from an artist, be it in a visual, audio or performance medium.
I wasn't attempting to come off as arrogant, I just was stating my opinions and then defending my statements.

my "opinion" on your "opinion" should not really matter
but my statment that you where not smatrt came after you stating he was arrogent and that people masturbate over heis art. both of wich statments are just idiotic...in my humble opinion.

also my staments had nothing to do with liking alex grey. i said you generaly dont get it cus aparently you dont im startign to think its spreads to more than just art now

Oh my you're a funny fellow. You never let it go.
You, my good chum, are the one with post, after post, after post, after post. All referring to me and my opinions on this subject.
You claim to have "let it go from the very beginning " Yet, for some reason, you have nearly double the amount of posts as I in this thread. I would quote them here but all you'd have to do is click back a few pages to see them.
I have indeed also said more than "HE'S A SELLOUT UR A FAGLOL" In fact I only implied you're gay. Just like Alex Grey implied that he predicted 9/11... which you said was okay so...
I mentioned that he does a good job artistically interpreting the psychedelic experience, however I suppose you were too busy sucking his dick and coming up with exciting and innovative new ways to misspell things. But if you read back you'd see that.
I also watched that video you linked. It was an hour long and fairly boring but now I know much more about Alex Grey's artistic vision... it did reinforce my belief that he is pretentious for sure though.
And:
Quote:
Bandersnatch said: You have your opinion and I have mine, neither of us is going to change the position of the other, it seems. However I will continue to defend myself if you continue to make unpleasant, unflattering and especially untrue comments about me.
We're not going to agree and as you have shown you're not capable of a reasonable argument.
If you want to talk more about his art as you claim, then do so. I just don't want to hear anymore about how artistic you think his vision is.

i think alex grey's artwork is pretty cheesy looking. talented guy, but nothing to write home about.
it just has that same look and feel as all those unicorn and sparkly dolphin pictures you find at dollar tree.

Yeah it can be somewhat cartoony, but it's just because it uses bright colors and iconic imagery.
An interesting thing I've noticed about a lot of psychedelic art, including Alex Grey's is that it uses the Golden Mean a LOT.
Which makes sense I suppose since that's a really aesthetic ratio and coincides with a lot of visual elements of psychedelia.

yea, that's kind of a good way of putting it. his work would be pretty tops if meant for a comic book or something, but calling it fine art is just absurd.
if alex grey painted panda bears or something, I highly doubt anyone here would actually give a damn about the man.

i dunno how this all started really. i mean he jsut made 1 bullshit claim. backed it up by saying "it was his opinion" wich i respect, of course. but when i ask him to actualy discuss his personal feelingon the artwork itself , not just the drama and bullshit surounding fame and fourtune.

I'm obviously smarter than you. I can use the English language correctly and debate intelligently whereas you have made no effort to and I doubt you could even find that "Check Spelling" button I mentioned.
I tried to be nice and end this argument but now you're making it obvious that you need to simply SHUT UP. You're barely coherent and I think that it's fucking ironic that you're calling me stupid.
And if you'd shut the fuck up and get your dick out of your mouth for a minute, you'd see that my last post was about Alex Grey's art and it was not negative.
Here, let me edit your post for you so it looks like it should if it was written by someone who has at least half a brain and isn't a fucking deadhead burnout. I marked most of your mistakes in red but not all of them because then I might as well just highlight the whole thing.

I hope you read the thread enough that you're saying this to be ironic. I think you're right, no one would like him if he painted pandas but that's not really his thing. He's got the whole psychedelic niche thing going on for him and he enjoys doing psychedelic art and he notoriety he gains from it.
It's not bad, it's done with skill and it's very intricate but he hasn't evolved much as a painter since he found his niche.

Right, I'm a fathead because I spell correctly and use proper grammar. And calling me stupid is a funny way not to fight.
