God I love shortwave. I swear, every nut in the world has his/her own shortwave radio show. From the religious nuts, to the conspiracy theorists, to the common garden racists. I would suggest every single person on this board have a listen.

You can buy a cheapo hand held system for like 25/30 USD. But if you really want to get good results, youd have to spend at least that.

The range is all over the world. I hear shows from Asia and Europe regularly. Shortwave is called "World Band" because these frequencies tend to bounce off of the ionosphere, making the range far beyond the horizon. One of my favorite news stations is "Radio Havana", the Cuban Governments radio show broadcast in English. Fun stuff.

how the hell does a radiowave make it around the world? Does it bounce of the ozone?
If that's so.. I'd be afraid to allow any device which emits that powerful of a radiowave to get anywhere within a mile of my testicles.

dunno..
Although equally amusing.. If you go onto shoutcast.com you can find ppl who have hooked up police scanners to their sound cards and broadcast them on the web.
Pretty cool
I was at work once listening to one in LA and heard something about a dude in a home depot parking lot with a shotgun

Close. They tend to bounce off the ionosphere. When I was little, I could pickup AM stations from half the US away, at night, during a good thunderstorm (never worked in the day, or if the weather was clear).

I have a small hand held receiver that I got for like 30 bucks at a radio shack. It was a display model marked down from a hundred. Its really nice, it can also do long wave and SSB on shortwave. I have a fishing line style antenna that increases its strength about 20x.
I have a larger Grundig shortwave radio that was about a hundred bucks. Its much more powerful than my other radio. I made an antenna for it out of some unshielded wire screwed over my porch. It increases the range incredibly.
I also have a police scanner that can scan the police and emergency bands, the common HAM bands, the air control bands, the coastguard bands, and the emergency weather channels.
I also have some software that allows me to decode morse code, rtty, and faxes by plugging my radio into my sound card. A lot of people don't realize this, but most weather images taken from satellites broadcast to earth as faxes over the shortwave bands. Ive never got one in time, but I have decoded morce code with this software.
It damn cool stuff. I hate to see how radio is almost ignored by geeks of today.

Yeah, Radio Geeks are the grandfathers of today's high tech nerds. My father was an early radio geek. He still has the first radio he ever built. He was in the seventh grade when he built it (this was the late 50s). It is a big blue box which is essentialy just an AM radio reciever. He got in to HAM radio when I was a kid. In the early 70's he put up a 50 foot tower in our backyard and I used to sit and listen to him talk to guys all around the world. I also helped him build a few things from Heath Kits. Who even knows what a Heath Kit is anymore?
We also had a darkroom and I learned a lot about photography as a kid. My Dad had pretty fucking cool hobbies!

when I was 10... I remember talking to my grandfather one night. He said how back in WWII... while island hopping in the eastern front, he used to make radio recievers out of MATCHBOXES.
He died when I was 19... just as I started to actually learn the appreciation for my elders and their awesome stories.
If he had lived a few years longer until I had really learned to artioculate my interests... maybe he would have taught me this skill.
