is my cactus sick?

I noticed a few scab like spots on my cactus just a few day's ago. I have looked around, it seems that root rot could be the cause, I will check on that right after I make this post.
But has anybody seen this before, or know what it is? Should I be making some cuttings to save it?
Thanks in advance.

Well, it is not root rot, but it is a bit root bound.
Think that would cause it?

Yeah could be rootbound. You're cactus will be fine, two of mine are rootbound to hell but the pups down the bottom growing green, the main stems have slowed and gone a bit yellow. (but thats ok, that makes em good for harvesting ) I've seem cacti bounce back from far worse conditions. Scabs usually are fine too, sometimes evidence of rot, can bounce back ok, if it gets too bad cut it out maybe make clean clones etc..
Though this also looks like it could also be evidence of being in an area with a high UV index (like New Zealand where i am). This meaning you may have had it inside growing too much over winter evident on the long thin bits (you should reduce light and water over this time), taken it outside and it got burnt and damaged by the sun because it got used to being out of it (like humans do when they don't get enough UV exposure). Could this be possible?
Doesn't look like pest damage, though we have different pests in my country.

I am in Canada, and I have had it inside underneath a HPS for over a year. But just recently it was moved into a smaller cabinet and has been sitting closer to the light for the last couple of weeks. So it could have been recieving too much light like what you said.
I did transplant it yesterday, put it in a 5 gal pot instead of a 3 gal. And moved it farther away from the light.
I think I will take a cutting anyway's just for the sake of practice, but I will let it heal up for a couple weeks first just to make sure.
Thanks for the help!

ah k, also make sure to give it some darks hours, 4 - 6 hours or so, the less hours of dark supposedly the more mescaline production though i've never seen any conclusive evidence and have also heard opposites (such as: when making cuttings for consumption, leave it in a completely dark place for a month). But yeah even succulents need some routine.
I know some people have different methods of making use of cuttings, but since (i assume) you're in a colder place. I reccommend letting it heal in dry place for a month, cold is fine (in my experience) just not any less than 1 degree celcius.
I also reccommend once its healed, for growth, planting it in cacti and succulent mix with the blue-ball type fertiliser (Yates brand with yellow fertisliser is also not too bad), and seeing as its already stressed, come summer time it should pop out multiple pups. I had about a 30cm one planted this way (cut in winter with no growing tip), it was stressed to hell, and now its got 7 wee pups growing off it. I'm so gonna try graft some to some periskiopsis!
