Just thought I'd share my cool microscope findings:
Celestron Handheld Digital Microscope http://www.microscopes.com/ms-la-mi-ph.html

This puppy plugs into your USB port and takes pictures or video at up to 400x. It has an led at the end of it too. Can be found for about a hundred bucks.. kinda cool

If you haven't bought it yet, you might hold off. I bought that exact model a few years ago to check it out. It's worse than useless, with about the picture quality of a webcam or camera phone. I gave it to my 8 year old neice to look at bugs. RR

One thing this country needs is a decent quality USB microscope for under $200. I don't even think you can get 800X600 res in the $200 neighboorhood. An obvious communist /oligiarchy plot.

With the right attachments you can attach cameras and webcams to regular scopes and it works pretty well. There have been some threads on it here.
You're never going to make a decent scope out of plastic. You still need all the features and quality optics of a good scope to make it very useful. That's why you're not going to be seeing them for less than $200 anytime.

Agreed.
In fact, even with cast iron housings and glass lenses, there is a HUGE difference in optical quality between my 'cheapie' $600 microscope that goes from 40X to 1000X, and my $3,000 lab scope with the exact same magnification levels. I'm sure if I could afford the latest Olympus, it would be far superior to the $3,000 'cheapie'. RR

It just seems odd that we can go into space on such a regular basis it doesn't even get mentioned on the news, kid's cell phones have cameras, BUT I can't get a decent 'scope that'll plug into my laptop.

You can get a decent microscope camera, just not for $200 anymore than we can send people to space for $200. I have a USB camera attached to my microscope. I use the M3 found here: http://www.microscopesusa.com/XLI_23M.html RR
