Put a lamp near it with an incandescent bulb in it, like maybe 100 watts. That should heat the area nearby at least a few degrees. Just make sure it's not right next to anything that might catch fire.

Yes, I've been eating them, for six or seven weeks now, haven't got sick once.

My cat did his first batch ever by incubating in a box on a shelf over his stereo receiver. He had to play with the distance from the shelf to the receiver some, but the damn thing puts off more than enough heat. He reccomends buffering with a folded-up towel. It's pretty badly ghetto, but it doesn't cost anything.

use a heating pad from Kmart or a similar store like that. They are very cheap, they are flat so you can lay them underneath a terrarium or jars, and you can adjust the heat to what you want.

This is a BAD idea... 1) if you can't afford a cheap fish tank heater, you can't afford a heating pad either and 2) Heating pads (the cheap ones) only have Low, Med and High settings and Low is way too hot to put directly under your terrarium or incubator box. You'd need to reduce the heat by insulating with towels.

Best idea I can think of is get a small night light or chrismas light bulb and wrap some aluminium foil into a large globe to fit LOSELY around it (about a 1/2" radius) to block the light. Be sure to put the shiny side outward (the dull side absorbs heat better). Then hang that little heater inside.

i do this now and my jars are fine. What's so wrong about having to put a towel between the two for a buffer anyway? I mean, it's not a complicated procedure.

I've done it too... It's very difficult to regulate the temperature and I'd be willing to bet that if your using a heating pad under a casing buffered by towels to get the air temp above the casing up, the bottom is drying out.

The only way to use a heating pad effectively is to suspend the tub over it in an enclosed area so that the entire surrounding area temperature is raised.

I succeded in doing that by using my oven as the encosed area, putting the casing container on a rack in the middle and the heating pad 8" below it on top of the oven's heating element. The entire oven kept a steady 87 degrees for the 8 days it took to incubate.

Not to mention the fact that this guy can't afford a cheap aquarium heater, so.... How's he gonna buy a heating pad?

Actually, i use the invitro method (which most don't like) and this method is pretty good because all of the moisture stays contained in the jar. On the other hand, there is quite a bit of water on the bottom of the jar.
You are correct, though, if the guy "can't afford a cheap aquarium heater, so.... How's he gonna buy a heating pad?"
