Draft busts and steals

Isn't it weird how Joe Montana and Tom Brady were drafted very late yet ended up being two of the greatest quarterbacks in history? Yet think about all of the first rounders who ended up being duds. And, I'm not just referring to football either. Any of you hockey fans remember Alexander Daigle?
I'm just fascinated at how some high draft picks end up sucking and some fourth rounder ends up dominating.

Freak occurrences, more than anything. The vast majority of good players will still be taken as top 32/64 or so picks.
It also has to do with the position being played. Shit like QB, WR, and safeties require a lot of "intangibles" In the case of QB there's leadership, nerves of steel etc, in the case of WRs there's technique in terms of route-running to fool guys and whatnot, as well as willingness to be a "complete player" in terms of blocking, going over the middle and shit. Safeties have to be able to diagnose pass patterns, judge a ball's flight and have the tenacity to come up and play the run. Along the same lines as to why why QBs WRs and safeties play forever, as well, I reckon. Rod Woodson was still a badass and he was nigh forty, Rodney Harrison still is (albeit with some HGH). Whereas for running backs athleticism and strength are more necessary (not to undermine vision, blocking and receiving, though a swing route isn't the most complex play to run), so it's easier to gauge value so it's easier to draft, they also have shorter careers because athleticism wanes.
I guess, at least.
