2 mushrooms on a first flush?!?
#7912734 - 01/21/08 10:42 PM (16 years, 11 days ago) |

After several failed attempts over the past few months (either due to poor sterilization, wrong materials, or whatever) I've finally managed to make something grow. Unfortunately, I got Two whole shrooms from my first flush, which is not good, but obviously much better than my other few attempts. I know this is not right, and it's probably something I've done wrong.
I've looked around as much as I can, but nothing seems to have quite the answer I'm looking for.
A little info: It's a BRF cake, I bought a case of them from mycopath. So it shouldn't be a problem with that. B+ spores from the hawks eye. FC is a 10gal aquarium, about 1" perlite in the bottom, with a spray shield and lid made from plexiglass. Temp is ~75 F. I misted/FAE'd at least 4 times a day, usually 6-8. Light is ambient room lighting, no special set up there. ...I think thats all the relevant information, apologies if I've left out anything important.
Question is, what did I do wrong? I know it was something! Did I spray too much? Not enough? Not enough FAE? Wrong size FC? Sorry for asking dumb newb questions.
Thanks anybody for any help =)

Way more perlite is needed. About 4-5 inches. Sprayshields are outdate. Just mist and fan.

Also, with an aquarium like that it could be CO2 buildup but if you FAE that often it shouldn't be a problem. Just get a rubbermaid and drill lots of holes in it and throw perlite in the bottom ala the RR Shotgun FC.

Right! No spray shield, more perlite! (40 seconds later) Thats taken care of!! Anything else?
Other random queston, while I'm questioning. Should I be interested in casings? As this is obviously my first grow, and it's not going Real well, I'm guessing not. Or would it help? Assuming I can manage to not fuck it up, would any of the casing teks be a good idea at all?

Unless you're talking about double end casings which are good ideas, you dont' case cakes. You dunk and roll cakes (roll in dry clean verm). And casing is usually not going to get you more shrooms. If you spawned to something like coir or hpoo. But cakes arent' such good spawn. For spawn use rye or wbs.

And to eat my own words, if you have an aquarium and it has no holes in it and the lid you have also has no holes in it a drip shield may not be a bad idea. With the shotgun FC you don't have to worry about drips from the roof because water usually doesn't condense up there. But with your setup if you don't have some holes in the lid or don't feel like putting holes in it, a drip shield might be a wise investment so water isn't dripping onto your caps and sitting there. If you want a set and forget method, look into monotubs. Buy a plastic tote, put 4-8 holes in it stuffed with polyfil, put your substrate and spawn down, case when ready and leave it until harvest.

Ermm...thanks for the help...but like... I can hardly grow a cake... You're talking about making bulk spawn/substrate.
Is that easier/more fool resistant? I'm obviously not the most fool resistant person... Would a monotub be less easy for me to fuck up? It would Certainly yield more mushrooms, than any cake. But, wouldn't spawn/bulk substrate, prolly be more than I can handle at my stage? I'm aware of aproximately how to do it, but not comfortable yet doing it.
Thanks a Lot for the help! And for not doing what many seem to do here... "Use search noob! I have time to flame you but answering your question is more trouble than calling you a noob over several paragraphs is!!!"

Naw. Cakes should be pretty easy but if you want to try monotubbing rock on . The biggest problem you're maybe running into is lack of moisture. Make sure to dunk your cakes for 24 hours and roll in dry clean verm. Then put them in the FC and mist and then fan (in that order) 4-7 times a day. If you STILL don't get any fruits...damn, I don't know what to say to that . But if you're desperate I've seen people use 1 gallon milk jugs as FC's with some polyfil stuffed in top and perlite on the bottom about 3 inches. Do a search for it and see what comes up.

Vermiculite...I've had a problem there actually. Nobody around here seems to carry vermiculite in the winter, or a fan for that matter... What kinda bonehead wants a fan or to start a garden in January?
I think I'll try bulk substrate. Would I be beter finding my own, or buying pre-made?
Re:B4B... Yes...I have a PC... Apparently I use it wrong, as I had to buy PF jars... =)

If you are having real problems with the pf teks i would suggest moving onto something else if you have a pc. I have way to much temperature fluctuation in my house to grow in pf jars and failed miserable just at getting the jars to colonize so i read that Wbs was a little easier in some ways so i was like ok and tried that to my amazement i found it alot easier then the jars alot less work too, and much cheaper materials its easy to find bird seed in the winter cause everyone feeds birds. You already have a pc so you are set to go if you have the jars just my suggestion I would try those and case them if were you cant hurt to experiment thats for sure if your interested anymore about that and need some help you can pm me i am more then willing to answer any questions you may have

"we cannot proceed" "Access denied" My internet must be jacked up, as is most of anything I do anywhere. Sorry for any trouble, and thank you for trying to help and not just "uSe SeaRcH NoOb!1!" as many would be prone to.
Edit: How many posts do I need to view the grow log section? Should I just post "lol"'s and "=)"'s like some folks do to grow a post count? Or do I really have to think of substantial contributions to this community and post them? My muse tells me what to post, and I'm terrified of my muse.
Not enough posts....that kinda sucks....

Zen Lunatic, Lesser John, Paula Mint, Dave Ellis, and other made up people say to not spam, and don't post if ya got nothing useful to say. So it may be a while before I can look @ grow logs.
No, I dun feel bad... So I suck @ making mushrooms.... I can make a wine from anything. A tasty wine at that! I don't completely suck! Send me some WBS and HPOO! 1oz. dry shroom says i can make a tasty wine from it!
Well, prolly not, but I bet I can =)

Oh...and it's 10 posts to read the growlog. I got there w/o spamming or otherwise being a douche!
Pathetic aint I? 2 months here and 10 posts... If ya don't got nothing to say...don't say it...
Edit... I still stand by my WBS/Hpoo wine bet. I'll need @ least a quarter, that is 3 months, but it's a valid bet. *donkey laugh* ANyone takin? /bored?
