sobriety is much better than being under the influence of external chemicals on a regular basis
it seems so simple, yet it's taken me so long to figure this out

I'm more on edge if I don't smoke for a while, but that's just my normal state.
Wish I still had some.

I would rather stay sober than spend £20 on some crappy wet green..

Good luck to you mate, i dont think i could go as long as six months without smoking weed.
I find it so much harder to quit when all my mates are constantly smoking infront of me!

True, I wouldn't be able to do this if it were the summer, but since all my buddies are in school or working we're not always sitting around bored so the temptation isn't as strong.

I don't know where you live but in my city there are meditation retreats where they can teach you but it's usually about 100 dollars or more. Personally, I think they should just teach it for free, you would think they would be a little bit more compassionate.
I learned Vipassana meditation from my sister - that is the meditation I would recommend to you. Look up some info online and then just practice it yourself and just go in to it with the goal of stopping your thoughts and eventually you will understand more and get better at it over time. Vipassana meditation incorporates body scanning (focusing awareness over your body parts one at a time) and constant return to focusing on your breath at the end of a thought and then the pause between thoughts will become greater as you gain better control of your mind

That is great! I am trying to get a new job so I too just started quitting. Today is my first sober day but after quitting crack and meth, weed seems to be an easy task.

I'm at two weeks myself and feeling absolutely fantastic, alert, full of confidence, and on the right path.

For sure! I've never had a problem with quitting weed - I think the only reason why my breaks in the past have been so short is because my friends would always offer me a bowl or a joint and I'd think "why not..?" but now I realize that, at least for me, my mind only really begins to get clear after a couple weeks so I didn't realize the significant difference between sober and stoned.

Meditation definitely improves your chances of having a lucid dream. I actually don't have that much experience with them, but the ones I have had were of the kind that you 'slip into' right from waking consciousness rather than becoming aware part way through.

i must add:
i plan on quitting the daily habit, even the once every now and then, i still like the herb but you gotta listen to mckenna: if you're going to smoke weed, don't smoke all the time, take long intervals and then smoke a whole bunch at once and you will see how hallucinogenic it really is. much more of an experience istead of using it as a crutch to get by everyday life

I stop smoking weed for a single day I go completely nuts. Course I'm bipolar and need it. I had a girlfriend for about a week once and I stopped smoking cause she didn't like it. Yeah, I was sober, but I went euphoric manic till she dumped me (the bitch!) and I started toking again.
Besides, weed is good for you. It helps your immune system, fights cancer, etc etc... so why stop?

Unless there's something wrong with you that is effectively medicated by THC, smoking pot for several hours daily is just about always detrimental.
For many people it lowers your energy level, memory, concentrating ability, motivation and initiative.
When I smoked daily pot that sure as hell wasn't true for me. Oh no, not for me. But once I quit for a year, it was clear as day that I've been deceiving myself. And many chronic potsmokers deceive themselves.
Quote:
it can be used intelligently
Definitely. Once a week or less often. But daily pot, what this thread is about, is almost always detrimental unless it medicates something which is worse.
Quote:
there are many things i've learned from marijuana and realizations that were in no way less intelligent than sobriety.
It is the sober part of you that had the realizations and learned from it. The same can be said of moderate alcohol use.
I'm not anti pot, I'm anti daily reliance on any drug. And I'm not anti-you, I'm just fired up at the moment
Trust me, if you've been stoned daily for years, once you've settled into sobriety it's like you're high on a low dose of psychedelic. Daily pot dulls the mind.

I've used pot daily for years at least three large bowls a day for a while.
I've recently been sober more often... weeks or months at a time and I find that it is much more difficult to relax in social situations and I am way less inspired during these intervals.
Three plus bowls a day was more than use, it was abuse... however, I think marijuana CAN be used daily, in moderation, for a personal benefit.
I CAN say that it is way better after taking a short break though.
I'd never give it up willingly, but a break now and then does some good as well.

I can see how if you've smoked weed regularly for years on end, your brain would adapt to find that the intoxicated state is the 'normal' way of functioning. So even if you quit for a month or better, you might still find sobriety feeling a bit off.
But I have to agree with almost everyone in saying sobriety is where it's at. Just because you aren't stoned, doesn't mean that you can't come up with new and original ideas. And when you do decide to cut loose and get a little messed up, you really experience that high again.

I am jealous of you peeps, I am trying to come out of a bad binge that I had over winter break. I have the last bowl or two of my sack left and then hopefully no smoking all semester.

Me too. I smoke really ridiculous amounts of marijuana everyday, it would be nice to cut back for a while. I just got to keep it out of arms reach. It's hard when your roommates are constantly rolling joints and stinking up the house with stanky ass dank.
I agree with whoever said you have to take at least a couple weeks off if you've been smoking everyday because your brain becomes cloudy 24/7 and REAL sobriety is when you've stopped for a good amount of time.

You do realize that that is mostly due to tolerance right?
If you smoke half as big bongloads just as often, within a few days you will get just as high as you are doing now. That was such an ephiphany when I found that out.
Quote:

If you are smoking really much, spend 3-5 days with each day smoking half of the day before, and then quit. The concensus is that for most people it is far less hard than they thought it would be. Thats psychological addiction for you: an inner demon who whispers in your ear that it cant be done.
Quote:

QFT. In my opinion, it takes at least 6 months to be completely sober and stabilizing in that might take a year.
Your brain adapts to reality by physically changing its wiring. (neuroplasticity) Right now it is wired for STON3D life. It has to rewire itself (which comes naturally) for sober life and that takes many months. Those months are a transition period where you regain your center.
Pick up fun activities. Try meditation for the other kind of contemplative inertia. Don't replace being stoned with not doing anything.
Any drug if taken to excess frequently will produce lasting changes that remain after quitting. For me personally, I feel this happened to me with cannabis as well. I feel less imaginative and less able to concentrate than I always have been.

I prefer smoking once or twice a week rather than 24/7. It seems to get rid of any negative side effects and I get extremely baked each time.
Being high all day every day can be nice in certain circumstances, but if I have a lot of responsibilities at the time it just doesn't work.

Shit, maybe we should just have a little experiment, eh?
How bout we start a thread and anyone who wants to can post that they're going to participate in the "take a break from weed" experiment. I want to see what percentage of the people give positive feedback, and how many give negative.
Sounds fun to me.
