PF Tek Cakes ---- CAN I CASE NOW?
    #7910238 - 01/21/08 04:06 PM (16 years, 11 days ago)

This is my first grow, so i chose to use the PF Tek method:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7869454#7869454

All things considered, I am lucky to have gotten 1/4 oz. dry out of the one cake's first flush... but now i am looking for a little more yield.

My question is this: Could I use these 2 cakes that have been in a terrarium (both of which were soaked, dunked and rolled / one of which actually fruited) and one remaining cake that has been colonized but not yet birthed for a casing approach? Is it a problem that the cakes have already been used?

If this is a potential option, what casing mixture should i use? The cakes consist of vermiculite, organic brown rice flour, and water---so I'm assuming that the casing would be the same...

So to make it a little more concise:

-Will it work?
-What casing mixture?
-How long would it take to colonize the casing before seeing pins?

any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

1.) crumble the cakes or surround them by extra casing?

2.) if i was to crumble, should i just crumble each cake and have each in its own container, or should i keep them all in the same container?

Your terminology is off a little. What you are talking about is spawning your PF cakes to more BRF/verm. A casing is a non-nutritious layer on top of your colonized substrate that provides moisture for your mushrooms. Some people call a cased substrate a casing also.

But back to your question, no I wouldn't try this as it is likely to contaminate. If you want to spawn to anything, it should be a properly prepared bulk substrate such as horse poo, coco coir or straw. You should also not use a cake that has already fruited as spawn. You want to use the spawn while the myc is still in colonization mode, not after fruiting.

Yeah I agree with FooManShroom, If you want bigger yields I suggest you start knocking up Grain jars.

alright, thanks for the help all.

sorry about my improper terminology, im learning...

So would you recommend that I just aim for another flush in cake form? Should i just soak them in cold water for 24 hours and then roll them in dry vermiculite again?
