Frustrated....
    #7909817 - 01/21/08 02:13 PM (16 years, 11 days ago)

Recently i spawned a few coir/coffee tubs with some WBS.
They colonized fine so i cased em and left town.

A week later 4 of 7 tubs casing layer is contaminated.
Its trich, and it spreads fast.

I went outside and broke apart a few of the substrate blocks and made an important discovery
its ONLY my casing layer contaminating - that fast.

Im using hydrated lime at 4% and get good results but
I forgot to turn the box fan on to circulate air around the tubs while out of town
so the room they were sitting in was just still air
also i noticed moderate pooling on the substrate before casing
but didnt try to hard to soak it up.

Too much moisture
No FAE
=
trich immediately.

My peat has been sitting outside about 6 months now, its old and i didnt screen it. My efforts to balance ph and pasturize werent enough this time around.

Very true. Especially when coffee is used, leaving it uncolonized with no air exchange is a sure recipe for molds. Live and learn.

Whats the pinset like without using a casing with coir?

Im starting to get frustrated with peat
because of all the sticks, having to screen it, blah..

I was thinking about switching over to the 60/40 tek
using coir in place of peat.

I recently saw Doc use 100% coir as a casing layer with good results

Coir 'casing' actually serves as a second layer of substrate, rather than a casing. Mushrooms fruit from uncased coir very well.

You don't need to remove the sticks or screen the peat. I never do. Simply adjust the pH and allow for plenty of air exchange.
