I need some ideas for music shows

The bar I work at has a capacity of 300 people and we have had some pretty big shows there (Girl Talk played recently and it was packed). I am thinking of setting up my own shows there. I am aiming for semi-famous acts. For example, I was thinking of getting the punk band Murphy's Law for an upcoming show.
Anybody have any ideas on bands that would attract a respectable crowd and that would be suited for a 200-300 capacity bar?

For crowds that size, jazz/blues is usually the best bet.

It's kind of a punk rock bar but it is really open to other things. Thursday is 80's night which is always packed. Friday and Saturday we have punk bands, indie rock bands, metal bands, etc.. Basically all kinds of shit. For example, Girl Talk is a sampler/mixing DJ dude so we are pretty open to anything.

Jazz and blues won't bring young people in. That's our target audience.

RandalFlagg, a venue of that size would have to stick to mostly regional acts to make a profit. Bring in some jambands perhaps, mix it up, and you will widen your customer base. Funk, bluegrass, etc for the middle of the week, and you can keep your current base happy Thurs, Friday, and Saturday.

A mix is where it's at. Like for instance have a Dub/reggae night, a punk night, '80s night's are fun, too. Maybe a metal night, or disco night. Hell, even a Tom Waits night would bring the people.:) You just have to ask the people what they want and work from there.

just read that it's an indie/punk place. scratch barefoot manner unless you want jam grass music.
try "annuals" or "the rosebuds" they're perfect for a venue that size. great indie bands.

Why not speak to friends that are really into the punk rock scene? These people will know the bands that can attract the crowds.

If its an indie rock bar, look into all the Saddle Creek Records bands.
http://www.saddlecreekrecords.com/
Most of these bands get to tour around since their label is semi-successful, and they draw a big crowd of indie rocker types, at least here in Omaha anyway.

You've got a great hip hop duo over there in Pittsburgh called Grand Buffet. They are hilarious.

Also another decent Pittsburgh band: Omega Love.

Ever heard of Wiz Kalifah? He's a rapper from Pittsburgh and he just got signed to Warner Bros. Imagine having Grand Buffet and wiz at the same show...it would be fucking packed.

Holy shit. As I look at their Myspace page I see they play at the bar right across the street from my bar a lot. Small world.

creeping weeds from philly might be worth looking into. i'm not sure if they can draw the kind of crowd you want, but they are a pretty good band imo. we played a couple shows with them and they are very good and a lot of fun to hang out with. annuals and rosebuds can probably pack that place though. definitely check them out.

Does he know someone peed on his sweatshirt?
You could ask Journey or something. If your target audience doesn't want to hear blues/jazz at a bar then they can fuck themselves and learn 2 have class.
