Dirty Perlite?

Howdy!
I decided to grab a cheap bag of perlite from walmart today and introduce it into my fruiting chamber so I could cut back on the frequency of misting but when I opened the bag I found what looks like chunks of bark or mulch mixed in with the perlite.
Is this normal? What the hell is this woody lookin crap? Ya think I just introduced contaminants into my fruiting chamber?
I prolly should have asked this before I soaked it and dumped it into the container but I figured it was normal till I watched the RR vid again and noticed his perlite to be perfectly white. Better late than never I suppose ><
A funny lil side note: The bag says this on the back, "There's only one thing in <Brand Name> perlite, 100% volcanic rock...". Since when did volcanic rock feel, look and bend just like wood...... /sigh

ya the walmart perlite is awfully chunky/coarse.. mine didn't have that much stuff in it.. it did have little orange bits.
i dont think it's that big of a deal.. doubt they are contaminants.. you could always sterilize the perlite before you put it in your fc to reduce/eliminate risk of contams.

Boycott walmart. All they sell is crap anyway. Get your perlite from a local nursery before walmart drives them out of business too. Don't use the stuff with peat mixed in. RR

Ya, I'm still a lazy noob who's gonna learn the hard way me thinks.
I grabbed walmart perlite cuz it was closest and I didn't try to sterilize it cuz I wasn't sure how to go about it or if the woody stuff would complicate things. (Plus the batch that it's being used for was intended to be a experimental one... somehow it's survived long enough for it's second flush)
I think, deep down, I want something bad to happen to happen to this batch. I expected them to become contam'd or fail at some point but they just keep on truckin. THEY BELITTLE MY WRATH!
It's time to shape up the way I think about my growing procedures. I'm find myself really enjoying the process and what was expected to be a one time adventure is manifesting into a full blown hobby. I'm going to steer clear of walmart from now on and start goin to Stauffer's for all my grow needs.
A few more questions: What's the best way to sterilize Perlite? Oven at 350 for 30 min? Should I be concerned about the woody lookin junk when it's in the oven? (there's no way I could pick it all out, some of it is nearly dust)
Thanks again!

it's a good idea to wash it out/strain it either way..
i wash mine out and there's so much dusty/dirty shit left on the bottom of the bowl..
what i do is just pile in in a bowl and let it soak in water with a little h2o2 for a while and then drain the water and scoop it into the FC.. sure it's messy but it keeps the perlite nice and white.
plus it hydrates/soaks it and all the bad shit sinks down to the bottom of the bowl and sticks there so it's easy to remove..
i wouldn't shop at walmart if i could help it, but i got giftcards and how can you compete with a one-stop shopping experience.
plus, walmart has essentially run our garden stores outta here so it's kinda the only option.. pssh.
and when you go to the garden stores they always want to know what you're growing..
