Question about horse shit

it is from the old vendor TS but it was never opened, the box has been sealed with tape since the day it arrived
it is 40lbs of his pre-pasteurized substrate (100% poo)
i would say it is almost a year and a half old, i opened it the other day to check out of curiousity and it looked normal (no colors/white spots, or anything really)
is it good still?

ok what you do is cut a little hole in the plastic and grab a spoon and dip it in the sub and pull it out give it a huge smell and take a bite..
if it tastes like horse shit, you'll be ok
..haha
naw if it doesn't look dried/contaminated i would say go for it.. it was pasteurized when it went into the bag, so there's not really much you can do... that's what i would do anyways..

i dont know much about bulk..
but i dont think it would have lost water content while in the bag, right?
if you bought some pre-mixed stuff it should be ready to go.. unless they give you special directions that came with the sub.
i would say no, you dont need to add any water to it.. but i dont think it could hurt it too bad if you added a little.. although i dont think it would be necessary.
i've been wanting to get into bulk/spawn but haven't due to a lack of necessity/time/space.. pf or grain do everything i need them to do.. otherwise i could probably give you a better answer, being more knowledgeable about that topic.

Even though it has been pasteurized the beneficial microbes are still eating the hell out of the nutrients within it, unless it has been sealed up so long the CO2 build up has killed the good bacteria off, which in that case, you'll want to re pasteurize. I really can't say. You could also add some more nitrogen matter in the form of chicken poo to give it a boost, or blood meal(buy at wal-mart). I'd say after 1.5yrs you're gonna have to add something to it, then re pasteurize.

now are these bags really pasturized? i think they are sterilized because they would probably be taken over in a month if they were just pasturized. i know what the site says but do you guys think a bag would last that long without being sterilized? i sterilize everything, its not a bad thing just not what they are selling it as.

duban_poison, I agree to the part of sterilizing everything, I sterilize my Hpoo and have had no problems whatsoever, I believe the symbiotic relationship between myc' and "beneficial bacteria" to be a farce, in terms of cultivation of PCs. I'd rather kill those damn bugs and let the myc eat their PCd corpses, lol. But as far as the Hpoo bag is concerned there can very well be colonized microorganisms of all sorts that have made it their home and you would never know or see it. So, at the very least I would repasteurize (or even better sterilize) before using it. If it was me I would be looking at making some amendments to it also.--chicken poo, blood meal, some nitrogen source,--then maybe 25% straw.
