US laws and social systems

After reading a bunch of the threads in this forum I've come to realize that America is one fucked up place to live 'freely'.
US drug laws will incarcerate you for a fucking joint? WHOA!
Thank God I live in Canada.

It's not so bad down here. Too cold up there, that's why the majority of your population lives closest to the border. I have a Canadian friend who lives down here for some reason. Incarceration for a joint is not the norm, things vary from place to place as I'm sure they do everywhere. People need to be smart and careful with their choices in life. No place on Earth has no rules or completely free choices. Not even God Blessed Canada. I do like your flag better... much more nature oriented.:) Stay warm up there and watch out our citizens are heavily armed. It's part of our free rights. Don't worry we'll protect you when China invades, if we don't get our asses handed to us with the rest of the world in about twenty years or so.

that is some really interesting insight atomicblue. i have to say, I'm guilty of never having the opportunity to discuss politics with an American.
Do you believe that this new transition is because of the actions of Neo-Conservatives or Democrats?

Unfortunately Americans are people too, even though our leaders are intent on making us seem like blood thirsty warmongers. Most folks I know are shamed by the world's view of Americans. I believe the Neo-Conservatives and Democrats you speak of are one and the same. There are no real good choices as to who should lead and to lead us back to a path where the U.S. is a nation that has the rest of the world's better interest's at heart. As in feeding, educating and saving what precious little is left of this great home of ours "Earth". We elect politicians on what they tell us and they start wars and sell contracts to rich friends to rebuild what they blew up. No,this is not a new transition. This is history past and present. Drink up...Rome is burning!

Technically they can lock you up for a simple joint, but usually they won't unless you really piss the cop off. We're not all monsters here in the US, in fact most of us are pretty decent folk. Don't judge us by our asshole leaders.

Do you guys find it true that lobbyists have more influence over politicians than their constituents?

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of government, as the 'protector of society', and how is it that such a large percentage of the American population are so cool about it? I have never doubted the competency of Americans and don't 'look down' on you guys, but just the political apathy of those who are letting a very small fraction of the American public run shit?

Most of us hate it. If it wasn't so damn cold in Canada id move there. A lot of Americans are completly brainwashed and think the government is great. And our government used to be great. But over time the rich (corperations in america for example) took over and now they are rooted so deep like herpes we can't get rid of them.

Friends in chicago tell me its way colder there. It seems as if the bloodsuckers are leeching on the warm hearts of Americans and playing on their fears in order to capitalize on disaster.
What a fucking train wreck.

Pretty much so, sad to say. We need a major overhaul in order to bring things back into line like the founding fathers had envisioned it.

I'm sure it is difficult to make things happen the way you originally envisioned it all panning out when you stepped into office. Lobbyists offer support for their cause which in turn may help your agenda. I'm sure many a personal vision was lost on the trail to righteousness.Takes money to make money and change. The dough they spend on elections seems like it could fix a few problems if allocated properly.
