Some questions from a beginner
    #7907760 - 01/20/08 10:33 PM (16 years, 12 days ago)

I'm trying to cultivate some, and have a couple questions for the seasoned experts. Any help would be much appreciated...
Thanks in advance

*What are some good strains for growing outdoors in the northwest United States?

*My friend has some growing, is it possible to inoculate my substrates with some of his cake even after it stoped fruiting? Any tips on this?

*I have tried some spores from a shop around here, but the spores came on a print. Most guides explain how to inoculate using a syringe...Does anyone have any advice on using spore prints? Should I just scrape the print and try to make a syringe? Do note that I can't order spores in my area...

I can't tell you much about outdoor species, but.

You can inoculate your substrate from his cake, although you'll need to ensure your sterility by making a glove box to do the transfer. cut a sample from the inner portion of the cake.

You should search the main site, there are plenty of techniques on how you can directly inoculate with spores or create your own syringe.

P. Azurescens and other woodlover's are listed on this site. Search woodlover's or caramel caps in the search engine and it will give you other that will grow in your area.

I have just started a few months back, so I'm a total NOOB, but I am starting to realize that I'm not doing bad at all. I make my own syringes with my own prints or clone my shrooms (the blades on an Oster blender can be screwed directly onto a quart jar[thanks MOM!]) or use the G2G method. The only real question that I haven't been able to find an answer to is why I'm not suppose to spray any water onto mushrooms themselves? I mean if they were outside they'd get rained on, right. I do it anyway, but it scares just as much that nothing bad has happened as it would if they all were aborted.

Mushrooms outside can handle water better due to constant fresh air exchange. If water stays on a mushroom it can cause a mushy spot and possible bacteria issues. If this happens just make sure you dry them completely before consumption.

To the OP: There's a strain guide at the top of this forum. Try that for a good outdoor strain. But I don't think there's really that much difference, unless you are looking at different species.

Just get prepared to do alot of reading. That's alot better than asking questions.

I would grow oe of the wood lovers. This nex strain from san francisco is super adaptive for outdoor culture and will grow in your area very well. I also hear that it is stronger than ps cyanescens

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
