Ready to Birth? (pics)
    #7907695 - 01/20/08 10:12 PM (16 years, 12 days ago)

This is my first grow.

I inoculated 4 of these cups with Mazatapecs (I couldn't find jars in time - now I've got 12 though, waiting to be impregnanted next week) a month ago. I used straight WBS. I plan on casing with verm and coco coir in the next couple of days. No contamination present.

These are 100%, I would say in my incredibly limited experience. Am I right?

I'm planning on birthing them Tuesday. I don't know if I'm going to dunk - it kind of scares me, because I have this vision of my cakes just dissolving in the water or something. Just becoming completely ruined. It just seems to me like drowning the mycelium leaving them submerged for 24 hours... but I'm just a noob. What do you think?

I'm going to be using one of these monotub setups, like this but with a cased tray of WBS on the inside of course. Or, should I just put casing on top of substrate straight up in these containers, without the perlite humidification? Would misting the casing layer maintain proper humidity?

Since I now have a pressure cooker (I simply boiled the 4 cups - no sign of contamination in any of them after a month), I'll also be doing 6 of those wide-mouth pint Ball jars Tuesday. After those have reached 50-70% colonization, I'll start the next 6. My plan currently is to make several monotubs - that may change in the next month though. I've got plenty of time to decide and buy materials.

heres a good idea. Crumble and spawn to an 80/20 coconut coir and coffee mix. And for Spawning, we create 3 parts of this to your 1 part of cakes.

We're gonna use coir which is found at ANY pet store in the reptile section or any grow store.

Next we need brewed coffee grounds (fresh ones are too acidic), either your own or ask a dunkin donuts or starbucks. they dont ask any questions because they usually give em out for other purposes.

And lastly, some gypsum. It can be found in a grow store, or crush up some drywall, or use some plaster.(some people say dont use plaster, but i say it works just was well)

Now mix your ingredients according to this formula.(12 cups should be used for your 4 cups of bird cakes)
4 parts Coconut Coir
1 part used coffee grounds
and 5% of that with Gypsum

Mix well and bring to Field capacity, pack down in mixing bowl and wait 5 mins, add more water and mix good again.(just cuz coir can absorb alot of water). keep checking your field capacity. you do not want it too wet.

Load in any jar or plastic soup container with loose aluminum foil instead of lids., and put in a pot of water.
Pasteurize it.(look for more info on that)

let it cool, then layer crumbled cakes and the coir mixture or mix around with clean hands. then cover the exposed grains on top with a little more coir mixture.

put aluminum foil over the top, and poke 5-6 holes with a knife or pen.

give it a 5-7 days incubation to have the entire surface white with mycelium.

then Case it with 10 parts Vermiculite, 10 parts Peat moss, 1 part gypsum, and 1 part Calcium carbonate(or .25 part Hydrated lime)
and wait a few days with that in your fruiting chamber.

any more questions, just ask me.
