I am ready to quit smoking.

I've smoked on and off for years. I can quit months at a time, but I find myself going back to cigs at random. Usually I break down when I'm drunk and start smoking again.
I'm at a point in my life where I need to lay them down, walk away and never pick them up again.
Does anyone have any pointers?

find somewhere you can buy kombucha. Its 3 dollars a bottle but will take away cravings and give your body a nice healthy jolt

Drink a beer or2 on the day you quit, and maybe every other day.... that way you kind of get used to drinking and smoking.
I had quit for 2 months in Iraq (and you would think it would be impossible to quit out there), but as soon as I got back and had about 6-7 beers I started smoking.
But last year in May I quit, and I would drink a couple of beers a day, just to get used to it.... and I have not had one yet. even when I have been fucked up and surrounded by smokers. I have even turned cigs away in my dreams. Only time I do think of cigs is while driving on long road trips ...... but it is not a big deal.
I was also on the patch... but quit that after about 10-12 wks.
Good luck. You are making a great choice. Abesh
PS.. My doc told me she would go on little run/sprint when ever she had the urge to smoke (when she was quitting), so that she would be too out of breath to smoke. I tried it twice and then realized that it reminded me too much of the cig I would smoke after PT .. my first cig for the day... so I did not do that....... May help you.

always keep in mind why and how much you want to quit if you ever feel like smoking again. you have to be able to not smoke in your most stressed out moment while drunk kind of thing. if you can not smoke then, then you should be fine. just remember if you don't really want it , it's not going to happen. think long term, how much you want to quit and stay off as opposed to the fix you need then and there. if you slip up, don't use that to rationalize another smoke. admit to yourself you fucked up but you're gonna keep on givin 'er.

That is hard. Try to avoid idiots eh well people in general. If you know you have something stressful coming up.... drink a beer / take a shot. It takes the edge off.
If it is really bad.. just try to make it to the end of the day and roll a joint and smoke it like a cig..... make sure to do this only at the end of your day - trust me.
Try to stay away from friend that smoke... just for the first month or so.
And like tasty said .... if you fuck up ... realize you fucked up, and try to put it behind you. don't use that as an excuse to start smoking again.... just remember that a little piece of shit cig got the best of you and be even more determined to not let it happen again.

I'm delighted to hear that you've decided to quit smoking. You couldn't do anything better for your health. However, I won't pretend to you that quitting is easy. Tobacco is the most addictive drug in the world, and nicotine is one of the strongest stimulants known.
acupuncture, hypnosis, nicotine gum, cold turkey, support groups - can work, but not for everyone. Most smokers who quit successfully do it on their own after one or more unsuccessful attempts, and most find that stopping cold turkey is better than trying to cut down gradually.
According to the American Cancer Society, if you're considering the nicotine gum or patch, you're better off with gum if you want to avoid periodic cravings (you tend to smoke at irregular intervals) and need something to occupy your hands. You're better off with the patch if you smoke at regular intervals and prefer not to chew gum.
Whatever method you choose, if you don't succeed immediately, recognize that few people manage to stop smoking on their first try and that the best predictor for eventual success is making repeated attempts to quit.
Good luck!

I quit smoking marlboro's and started smoking Nat Shermans. The Nat Shermans are less addictive, and I can get by with only smoking 3 or 4 a day...... It's a start thus far....

That is a start.
I cut down for a week or so and then I quit, so keep at it. It sucks at first, but once you get the "I am better than smokers" pompous asshole feeling, it is all downhill form there
I used to love smoking after a meal, and that was the hardest for me to let go, but I changed my ways by doing the dishes as soon as I got done eating - It helped.
Also you guys may be interested in Zyban. That is what helped me quit the for the 2 months. I don't know where you would get them since I got them when I was in the army (through the army). They are kind of like a anti-depressant that blocks the effect of nicotine. They kind of put you in your own bubble where you are not phased too much by the people around you (something that is almost impossible in the army).
Before that I had used the patch, but started smoking again in 2-3 weeks.
This last time I used the patch for a while too, and I have been smoke free since. I have also passed the test of being shit-faced and being around smokers and still not smoking. So I am hopeful that I will probably never smoke a cig again.
I still do smoke pot 1-3 times a week. Also during the first month I did smoke a few cigars - without inhaling - when I felt like I was going to poke my finger in the eye of the next person I saw.
Keep at it both of you. Abesh

I had tried the nicotine gum at one point, but I found it as a mere replacement.
The flawed concept of using it was that when you feel the urge to smoke, chew the gum. The problem lies in that as soon as you light up a cigarette, the effects come up immediatley. The gum takes a few minutes.
It found myself going through a whole box of gum without smoking, but when I would run out, I was reluctant to pay the price for more gum and just buy the cheaper alternative. Cigs.

My wife quit with Chantix. I don't know if it would work for you or not. Sounds like your problem could be centered more around drinking. Good Luck.

Personally, I think that using any aids to quit smoking is the wrong idea. I'm addicted to ciggs...so I'll try taking something else that's addictive so I can stop. See the flaw?
Will power is the only way to truly quit. Anything else and you'll only be setting yourself up for that future fall-off-the-wagon. You have to know that it was you that did the quitting, and not some chemical doing it for you.
I smoked for almost 10 years, off and on. I "quit" many times, only to start smoking again (usually while I was drunk). Then one night I thought to myself 'why do I need these?' while lighting up. I realized that I got absolutely nothing from them, and had only been telling myself that they did me any good ('helps me relax', 'calms me down', ect). I broke my cigg in half and threw my pack out, which was half full at the time. That throwing the ciggs out was symbolic for my wish to quit.
That was 4-5 years ago, and aside from a few drags off a cigg at a party a few months later, I am completely smoke free. That one cigg I tried to have a few months later made me feel physically ill...a far cry from the 1/2 pack a day or so that I was previously smoking. I now see it for the disgusting habit it is.
Anyway...food for thought.

Cigarettes are easy to obtain, and there are triggers everywhere to make you want to light up again. It's tough, no doubt. However, if I'm stuck chewing this nasty gum for the rest of my life instead of smoking, then I do see that as a safer alternative.
